Lighting against a Sportbike?

I have 2 friends that are going to drag race a 1/4 mile. One has a 04 Lightning and the other a 03 CBR600RR. Both are stock. They both have been arguing about who will win. My friend with the bike says it will do high 9's low 10's in the 1/4 mile. Does the Lighting stand a chance? I don't know much about the bike's but I think the lighting may have its hands full. Also, have any of you raced a bike in the 1/4 mile? If so, how did you do?

dude, a bike has about the best power to weight ratio you can get. an L, on the other hand, doesnt. the bike will win. simple as that.

Sport Bikes are more than any STOCK car/truck can handle. The CBR600 more than likely won't run 9s but it could run 10s and definately will run 11s even if the person on it can't ride. A stock Lightning has about as much of chance beating that bike as a stock Backhoe has at beating a Lightning.

well if it does indeed do high 9's low 10's then no way. Lightnings stock run mid 13's or so.

The CBR600RR runs a slightly high 10 stock, so, looks like the lightnings gonna get dusted pretty bad.

Racing bikes is really never a good idea, even normal bikes.

My lightning friend is not going to be happy about this. I figured he wouldn't have a chance. At least he didn't bet money on it. He just got the truck a few days ago. He thinks it the fastest thing on the street. Oh by the way, I am corrected on the bike being stock. He has went 1 tooth down in the front sproket and 2 up in the rear sproket. I guess thats why the bike does high 9's in the 1/4 mile. I have him on the phone with me as I type. I can't believe a 600cc machine can do that. He says it has 120 hp and weighs 370 pounds. Damn, so I guess there is probably no street legal vehicle that could touch that. I am getting off the phone with him now and calling my friend with the L. He is going to be pissed!!! lol

You need to get your Lightning friend to bet you something Special on this race. Don't give him a clue that he really doesn't have a chance. Bet him something crazy like if he loses he will have to take an Ugly Girl of your choice out on a date and you'd do the same if he wins.

Of course you have to set them up to go somewhere that you'll be hiding to take the pictures.....so he'll never forget that race.

It comes down to the driver on the bike since its so much harder to launch. Accelerating in second is a battle between me and the gap between front tire and ground. You'd be amazed what the 100-120hp from a modern 600cc sportbike can do. They all weigh around 400lb with a full tank of gas and reasonable 0-60 estimates are in the mid 3 sec range, 0-100 in about 6. Once they're rollin' don't waste your gas... you're about to get eaten.

A stock/ mildly modified 'vette/camaro/mustang etc can put up a bit of a fight, though I'm always courtious and wave as I pull away.

No way will a 600 RR do that in the 1/4. That is what Hayabusa runs stock and they are the faster production sport bike in the world! I say high 10's at best to mid 11's stock. The 600 RR aren't alot faster than the F4i I used to have.

Regardless, the L is gonna get his butt handed to him

I have a 2002 Lightning and a 2002 Suzuki Hayabusa. For what it would cost me to make my Lightning as fast as my Busa, I could buy another one of each. BTW, my bike runs VERY low 10s in the quarter...there is no way a stock CBR600RR (or any stock bike displacing less than around 1000cc's) will do that.

P.S. The Hayabusa is the fastest production bike in the world, but they are referring to top speed. There are bikes out there that are nearly as fast/sometimes faster through the 1/4 mile. GSXR-1000, ZX-12R, YZF-R1 to name a couple.

Here is a link from Cycle World magazine. It says the CBR600RR is the fastest of the 600's. They tested the stock bike at 10.68@130.07. Now my friend weighs about 120 pounds and dont forget about the sproket change. So maybe high 9's low 10's are possible.
CBR600RR test results.

As fractal' said...no way will a CBR600RR run 9's regardless of what kind of gearing change your buddy made. Dropping 7 tenths with a gearing change??? Are you fuggin' kidding me? A gearing change may net you one possibly two tenths but it also increases the wheelie factor on a short wheelbased sportbike. A 'Busa geared down will run mid to high-9's and that's on a longer wheelbase bike that puts down mid-150's at the back wheel. A 600RR may run 9's...

off a cliff but that's about it.

He's got a decent shot at running low 11's if he's a good rider...a great rider on that bike will run high 10's. You friend with the bike is what I'd like to refer to as...

well, ive seen plenty of bikes run at the track, i saw a couple run 10's, no where near freaking stock at all. I saw some lightly modded ones running 11's. Im sorry but im gonna have to say this guy will be running 12's, if he is lucky a high 11. My best guess would be 12.3-12.7. Hope that helps.
