I'm running 285/60/18, and don't have any problems with fitment. However, I'm not happy with the 1.5" they lift the truck. I thought I'd get better gas mileage, but I actually get worse. They change the 3.55's to 3.21 effective axle ratio, and the 3.73's to 3.37's. There also isn't that much difference in the ride.

The 285/50/18s sidewall is only .4" taller, so it won't make much difference from the original. (3.55->3.45; 3.73->3.63)

I wouldn't go taller than a 50 series.

And the 305/45R18's are within a hair's breadth of the stock F1's in terms of height.

How much cheaper can you get tires that size? You can get a stock sized 295-45-18 made by Hankook for $146 per tire from this link if you are looking to save some money.
