Id go with the Gen II. Its just nicer all aorund. I just bought my 20 sec minivan. I went as new as possible for the fact that newer IS better. Better ride. Better handling. Better Looking. More standard features. Safer. Nicer. Newer. Know what I mean? If not (havent had enough vehicles yet), then there is something to driving newer technology, be it mini van or Lightning, or whatever. Wait till MY sugar mama shows up!

Thats a very nice looking truck! With 59k on it, and if it's running well, I would reluctant to part with it. But, unless you're partial to that body style look, no matter what you put into it, it will always look a little "dated" compared to a Gen II. If it were me, I probably would save up for a Gen II.

HDs are just so slow though... They're longer, and that's about all they're good for.

I'd say skip the Gen 2 and get a Gen 3 keeping your Gen 1 stock.

The Gen 2's are somewhat old tech now. Maybe not as much in the powertrain area, but suspension, interior, etc are all over a decade old. The Gen 3 (inheriting from the new F150) will have outboard shocks in the rear(big plus), a better front A-arm suspension, better brakes, stiffer frame and body structure, and a much newer interior, that IMHO, looks worlds better than the Gen 2 interiors. Plus it will have way more power.

Randy
The gen 3 is definately not a choice for me. Gen 2s are old tech? Then WTF is a gen 1, ancient history??

1) A Gen 1 with a stroked 418/Vortech@14psi will reliably put out 650-750 hp. It will outrun all but the hairiest Gen2s, and with half the investment.

2) Don't buy a Gen2 for the warranty. You either have a warranty or mods. Don't count on both. You also have to worry about sparkplugs and rods. You might get lucky, and not have any problems, but modding an L is a good way to put yourself into an ethical dilemma.

Bottom Line...If you're planning on modding, keep the Gen1, and use the money on mods. If you want a new vehicle, buy a 03 L with the extended warranty.

My vote would be to keep the Gen1 and put it in the 10s.

id say it all depends on what you like the best set aside you have a Gen 1 and think about the modds you want to add compared to the Gen 2 truck if they about the same then keep the Gen 1 it will be faster if you like the tech. then the gen 2 is better reguardless depends on HP vs Tech. Money could qual out to be the same but id say go with the gen 2 save the money for a while and be a lot faster then you planed and with rob and all them im sure you will have no problem modding good luck wish ya the best...chris

When the Gen 3's come out, I'll make you a deal on a slightly used low mileage Gen 2

You could always move to NY,
have a free place to stay,
have a Black Gen II
and keep your Black Gen I

Schitt if it goes well,
what the hell we'll get us a Gen III too when they come out

What is it your looking for, Speed ? Wrrnty ? Looks ? What ?
If it's wrrnty, you know Ford Voids it for the wrong air,
so I assume it's not that.
Here's my two choices
Put a S/C on your Gen I, and join the 12 sec Fun,
or get a Gen II, keep the wrrnty and go for a Filter, Upper Pulley,
T/B, FTVB, and a Predator, you can always de-mod it,
and hide those Mod's from Ford "if ever need be"
Of course I'd go with a 03/04 ONLY, so you get the new
and improved Heads, Block, Head Gasket, and correct Spark Plug Threads in the Head.

But I still like the idea of you moving to NY instead

Watch out... You have a black gen 2, so I might be moving to NY soon.
I don't care about the warranty, but I think if I get a gen 2 I wouldn't be spending much money on mods for a while since I'd have to make payments and whatnot... God, why can't ***** like this be for free? How the hell do you people do it??

You will be highly disappointed in what people are willing to pay for your truck. Best bet may be to just keep it for now and save money for a used 99-2004.

Ok, all jokes aside.... If you had a gen 1 that was pretty much stock, would you either leave it the way it is and get a gen 2 in the future.... OR would you dump all of your money into the gen 1 and forget about the gen 2? You can't have both.
Considering this is a gen 2 dominated board, I guess I already know what most of you are gonna say... But I just figured I'd ask anyway...
Oh, and please keep the stupid comments to yourself... I'm being serious (for once at least).

Hey keep it the way it is when it comes time to get the new L it will be easier to find a buyer who wants a stock truck than one that was modded and raced....unless you dump alot of money in it and find a drag racer for a buyer.

Yeah, that's what bothers me... My truck is worth ***** even with the low mileage it has.

Good point... But it's just so hard to keep this truck the way it is. My jr. dragster was faster than this in the 1/8th mile.

So keep it for a while, & enjoy what you can of it, while saving for it's replacment

It may seem slow, but remember to upgrade to a used Gen2 you'll neeed at least 10k+ whatever you need to meet your current goal, leaving you with payments, higher Ins. and no more money to Mod.& play. It's not easy but ask yourself a couple questions.
1- how long will a Gen2 satisfy me until I feel like I do now?
2- If I go with a gen 2 can I realisticly expect to have Money to upgrade it?
3- If it breaks can I afford to fix it
4- Can I realisticly save some for a replacment and still do some Mods to the Gen1 to tide me over? Knowing you'll never see the mod money in resale.

I've always loved the Gen1, it's what got me hooked on owning an L. It took 10yrs and fate to get one (it's a Gen2) . It was Heaven at first, But I got bored with it's performance in 3 months.
Maybe it's just me but I've had my L for almost 2 yrs. it ran 14.0s now It runs 12.6s to 12.9s all day and all I want is MORE, and the money tree isn't there.
It's not going to be easy ,and no matter what everyone says your the one that knows your financial situation.

just an old mans .02
good luck Leeann. sounds like you've got a good bunch of freinds over there.

I say keep the Gen 1 and spend some money on it and you will have a truck that is just as fast as a Gen 2 and no payment like you would have with getting a Gen 2. Get a Vortech blower or something like it and you will have a 13 second Lightning with just that bolt on. The Gen 1 is a much better looking truck I think.

sell the gen 1 to a poor kid in nj for 5000 dollars so he can race next season and buy a gen 2.
