t56 conversion??
yeah i think the general consensus is:
a) you probably couldn't do it if you wanted to
b) if you actually did do it, you would be doing it again cause it probably won't last long
c)you probably don't wanna do it anyway, torque rules.

I have read all the old posts about it, which all contain excellent cautionary information) and I still want to do it! It is my first major mod when I get out of school and get a real job.
I had a very quick conversation with D&D. They have a 550 lb.ft. version(I believe it is closer to the Viper part than the Mustang of Camaro part) for about $2400 brand new. I believe that Lakewood has a bellhousing that will adapt the the 5.4 block to the T56. There are also plenty of strong clutches and flywheels out there for the modular crowd.
I had two questions/pitfalls.
1) Don't know whether the crank is bored for a pilot bearing. It may not be, but it's not a show stopper if it isn't.
2) People have said that the computer and the tranny are very well connected and depend on eachother. Maybe the tuners have learned more about the computer since those older posts were made. Is this insurmountable? I hope some of the tuners can chime in. Can you tailor an ECU to be happy with manual trans?
I am happy this thread has come up again. I can't wait to have a T56 in my L.

Sure it can be done. Just a matter of cubic dollars. Probably easier to go DFI rather than screwing with the stock ECU. Linkage won't be fun. Going to take a long shifter to make it accessable. Won't have a nice short throw like on the Cobra or Cobra-R.
You may not like the end result as much as you want to.

HAs anyone done a T56 conversion in their L? i like the auto.. but i'd much rather have a manual..is there any info out there at all.?? Thanks in advance
The Lightning 4R100 is one of the most efficient automatic transmissions built. Transmission losses amount to about 11% according to the stuff Gregg Evans has posted. That is amazing for an automatic.
More importantly you would completely destroy the value of your L. The resale would drop significantly unless you happen to find someone who really wanted that exact modification.
Shift throw is another issue. It would be long and (I would guess) sloppy.
Have you ever driven a standard shift truck? It isn't as much fun as driving a standard shift car (at least I don't think so). There is so much more weight to get moving that driving becomes a chore.
If you were going to do road course racing, then the extra control might be worth it, but short of that, I doubt it.
The worst problem would probably be your clutch life though. Get a Monster Box and never worry about your transmission again. Put a 5 or 6 speed in and you will probably have to change your clutch on a regular basis (I do not know how hard you drive).
Just my 2 cents.
