Built Motors and Piston Noise...

For all of the folks who have built motors which pistons do you have and how do they sound? I know you can get Probe's, JE's, CP's and maybe one or two more. I have heard stories about alleged 'piston slap' with some of the aftermarket pistons and was wondering if anyone has had any experience with this. I seem to recall someone having a motor built with Probes that supposedly sounded like a diesel upon start-up. I realize that builder tolerances factor in to a certain degree but I was just wondering if one make of piston was inherently noisier than another.

Has anyone attempted to get Mahle pistons for their build-up? That appears to be the maker of the piston that is going in the new GT motors.

midsouth bolt and I both bought built small blocks from JDM with manley pistons in early 2002. His engine sounded like a diesel but mine sounded pretty good. I think it has to do a lot with attention to detail. Some pistons do expand more than others though and will knock around anyway until warm.

If you subtract the miles to the dyno and the miles put on the dyno you end up with about 8 yearly driven miles , BEOTCCHHH!!!

My brother's motor sounds like a diesel on start-up(Probe pistons).
Tommy's motor from Outrageous Performance is the quietest I have ever heard(CP pistons). -Mat-

Fast,

I've got a line on a few builders...shoot me an e-mail at dandkmcguire@***.net if you want the skinny. Heard you toasted your current motor...wasn't that one built by the Bartling Motorsports boys??? You didn't let Matt get near your truck did you...I hear he can tune a mean John Deere but that's about it.

Our motors are very quiet but there are lots to do to get it that way! You need to go to a builder that knows the modular motor.

We will have our short block on special for the holidays (remainder of Nov and Dec) !!!!

I put JE pistons in my motor. It's definitely noiser than stock but not too loud.

Our "built" motors are built with CP pistons (the strongest). They have been known to be noisy but this is not so. There is a correct way to tollerence them and if not done properly will make noise. Ours are so quiet that I would have to say that it is quietier than the stock motor.

They are now listed on our website and will be part of the holiday specials being posted either later tonight or tomorrow. It is listed at the holiday special price!

Outrageous Performance short block $3,600
