If you've got several grand lying around, then a built motor is the only thing that's going to give you complete piece of mind. However, if you're like most of us, then you just need to excercise a little caution while driving or racing your truck. There is plenty you can do to hop it up, and have a great time in the process.
My point is simply to bring to your attention, that while these motors may not be bulletproof, they can still handle quite a bit of power, if you just abstain from certain activities....like sustained top end runs, or hotlapping it at the dragstrip (let 'er cool off b/w runs), try not to do a lot of 30mph downshifts to first gear(hard on tranny) etc...etc...
My L just dynoed 487rwhp today, with the addition of Long Tubes. I've probably got over 100 passes(in various stages of modification) on her at the dragstrip, and have spanked plenty of a$$ on the street, and it's probably my fear of hurting the stock internals that keeps 'er together, or maybe it's just blind luck. Obviously, these motors are gonna have their limits, and I'm sure I'm pushing it, but I still believe that these motors can withstand a lot of power, if the owner is MINDFUL of his truck's limitations.

so if i have a few grand laying around then what would you suggest, with the mods i have and the additions i am planning in the next few weeks i should be approaching your numbers. I know once you approach 500 hp on the stock internals, i'd be pushing the limit....Is it worth just rods now, then an engine rebuild later or just do the whole thing at once. this is my daily driver, so blowing my engine would certainly suck....

The problem with replacing "just" the rods is, that the labor is going to be the same as replacing the entire shortblock, or longblock for that matter. You'll pay more for the parts, but the labor is the same. The majority of guys figure while they have the can of worms open, may as well take advantage of it.
There are 3 major players in the Lightning Community. They all know their stuff. My personal preference is JLP (Johnny Lightning Performance). They're on the supporting vendors list. It's sometimes hard to get through(phone busy), but Johnny and Sue are a class act IMHO. Very knowledgable, courteous, and will shoot you straight. That's who I'll be calling when the time comes. Hope this helps.
