Hey I'm not sure if anybody asked but, was there any fog? I could never figure out why people drive around with the fogs on when there is no fog. So I guess that I could see why an officer would have a problem with foglights on, and no fog. It's almost like using your wipers when its not raining.

I do that all the time. I didn't know there was anything wrong with it. I thought the law was "Lights on wipers on." Opps. -Mat-

I am sorry we don't see eye to eye. I have my opinions on life you have yours. Once again I will say I have never disagreed with any cop that has pulled me over or ticketed me and have spoken to them all with the most respect. Have you never had a disagreement with someone>??? If you say you haven't then you are liar my friend. Whether it be an officer of the law or someone else, we all have disargeements with people. That is the way this world goes. I wish it wasn't like that but it is. Plain and simple. I don't steal, I don't kill people, I don't do drugs and don't drink and drive, I just drive with my foglights on and travel 5-10MPH over the speed limit. I am not hurting anyone by doing those two things. -Mat-

Yeah thats like my friends Seville. When you turned the wipers on the lights would automatically come on. The problem was the electrical was so screwed up that when he would turn the lights on and then turn the wipers on, the lights would go off and the climate control would go to the lowest temp. Cadillac bought the car back.

Ok here is another way of looking at it, and it’s called reality. Regardless if you agree with it or not it is reality. Once you learn what reality is then the better your life will be.

The police office = King

You = Peasant

You can try and ration it to the best of your ability but it still comes back to the officer is king and you are the peasant. Is that fair? That could be debatable, but life is not fair and everyone needs police officers in their towns.

You have two options. First try to get along with this police officer by respecting him, yes sir, no sir and anything you say sir. That will go along way to making it a win-win situation. Once you show him some respect he just may show you respect in return.

Second, continue as you have with this office and you will lose, the peasant always loses to the king…

One thing you should do as soon as possible is to check with your local and state laws in regards to fog lights. If it is illegal (to have your fog lights on any time other then when there is actually fog) in your town, city or state then you’re screwed. Does not matter if they came stock or not, your town, city or state laws trump what ever may have came standard on your truck.

Your truck also came standard to do ¼ miles in what 13 seconds or so but you still have speed laws, so never go in to a court room and try to tell a judge you can use them (fog lights) the way you wish because they are from the factory as standard equipment because if your young the judge will laugh his/her *** off…

Cool

Actually they are normally called driving lights with a clear lens and fog lights with a yellow lens.

I learned a long time ago that you can't win when a cop wants to be an a$$hole.

I was in the same exact situation as you and about 21 years old. I was in my "79" Lil Red Express truck sitting at a light when a cop flashs his brights at me from across the intersection. I didn't even know it was a cop because he was on an incline that hid is low profile roof lights plus the glare from his lights from being on the incline. I flashed mine right back at him. He puts his on high beam for awhile and so do I. Well the light changes with both our high beams on and I cross the intersection with him making a U turn right behind me. He pulled me over and gave me a ticket for bright lights. I usually just say "Yes Sir and No Sir" but this guy had me fuming. I told him that he flashed me first and then left his high beams on. He just gave me the ticket and said I shouldn't have left my high beams on.

I paid the ticket because it was only about $20 and not worth a court fight.

Live and learn.

Here in AZ the cops set up on motorcycles to check traffic. 5 cops on bikes. Tell me that ain't REVENUE ENHANCEMENT for the city. Every day they set up in different spots to cash in on that dough. Does nothing for controlling the speeding. Hell the briefing from the cops is that you can mail in your check they even provide the damn envelope. I say ******* those type of cops! Just my 2Cents.
One way to look at it, is if nobody broke the law while they are out patrolling, then they wouldn't have any revenue enhancement would they?

Easy way to put this behind you would have been to Smile, Say oh really ? Sorry ? Turn them off and if you wanted to turn them back on in 100 feet.

Or you can throw them attitude and see what it gets you.

Assuming that the cop was being honest your lights were bothering him - then he was doing his job and trying to make it easier for the rest of the world to drive.

Doug
Doug,
clearly the best and most responsible way to respond to the situation.. its what I would have done, and also thanked the officer for bringing it to my attention.

Clonetek hit the nail on the head.... If you are driving with your fogs on and the weather is non rainy, foggy etc... a cop can bust your ***** and: A. give you a warning, B: give you a ticket..... Granted a cop that pulls you over for this really is being a ball buster.... but hey.... cops have more power/authority then we do, so either do what they say or take the ticket....

I know someone is gonna say "that is bull*****"......yeah it is... but they are cops, they do what they want... so abide by laws, others make their own laws..... so unless you know the police captain or state poilce chief (heheheh i do) i would do what they say... b/c they really can make your life a living hell....

Mat, As you drive down lifes little road you learn after time that you must avoid "disagreement"(s) with law enforcement officers, judges, the company president, and such. People like these have power / have power over you (like you are the peasant and they the King as someone else said here) and if you get in a power play with them / a disagreement, etc. they will win. Sure you might win a particular disagreement but the following week, month or whatever they will swat you hard and get back at you.
You, Mat need to know that even guys like you and I that are basically upstanding, law abiding people can get a ticket, arrested, found in contempt of court, etc. just like a bad guy. YES, we all have disagreements but ya learn that disagreements mean trouble. As you get older and no longer have the excuse that you are a kid you are held more accountable for ALL your actions. I suggest you reread your initial post here and see how sophomoric it sounds. Reading it the only ones that could side with you are those just starting to drive down lifes road (that haven't already learned better) as your self.
Will close by saying speeding as WE do is against the law as is using OUR foglights (in certain states) at inappropriate times. I on occasion do both and I am 54yo. WE break the law WE are open to a ticket. WE need to avoid tickets so...... WE do not to a cop, get in disagreements, antagonize, make wiseass comments, throw the bird, wave in a cutsey way or anything that will get a nice cop or an "azzhole" cop to give us a ticket. This is lecture #360 I give my 4 sons 3 of which are drivers.
p.s. I frequently am in the Shelton, Wilton, Stanford areas of Ct. and they are very lets say upscale communities and the residents
encourage/push their local police departments to enforce the rules against teens, passer throughs, etc.. Much of CT $ revenue in local municipalities is brought in from traffic tickets. It is like this in many parts of the USA. Nope, not right, but reality...

But, on the fog lights; they are not illegal in any way I can think of other than if they are blinding the oncoming drivers. I have to admit that after I lowered my truck I started getting the high beam flash's; after looking that front of the truck I realized that the fog's were pointing up too high so I adjusted them down a little.
In FACT "In New York and many other states there are laws
(even if the foglights came stock on your vehicle) that an officer can ticket you for "irresponsible use of auxiliary lighting". At 54yo I still get an occasional cop that will follow me when I'm on my Harley or in my L looking for me to break the law. Guess the cop is kinda "profiling".

Yeh; they should spend more time looking for drunks, druggies, and bad guys than people driving the trucks around town with there fog lights on.
Well, in todays day and age police departments have many different units. Departments have many officers. There are units for Robbery, Homicide, Burglary, Child Welfare, Narcotics, Drunk Driver Enforcement, Community Recovery, and more. There is also a unit --Traffic Enforcement-- that brings in lots of $ - revenue for local municipilties and helps pay the cops salary, the traffic judges salary, repair of local streets and more. --Traffic Unit cops-- spend their work days giving traffic violation tickets. That is their job! (Ya don't do your job you lose it. You lose the job that feeds your kids, etc.) They, the cops are not for the most parts bad guys, jealous of your L or such BUT "just doing my job" as they would tell you. Going after "drunks, druggies, and bad guys is for the most part another police units job.
p.s. No, I am not a cop I am in the Medical field. I do work in a Maximum Security Prison though and have done so since the early 70's.
