Finally a little competition from GM!

I know it's tough for us old geezers
to accept change, but look at the original Mach 1 and the new Mach 1. Much different cars, but both cool in their own way. The GTO's were nice cars in their days, but I loved to toy with those GM guys with my moms car. It was just a 1968 Mercury Cougar GTE sleeper that was pumping about 425 hp. It was pretty much stock with just a few tweaks to raise it's original 390hp. Very rare and very fast. It was a pretty cool car for a 16 year old to drive around in. Surprised myself a few times keeping that car on the road. I wish I had that car today. I think only about 650 were built.

Not the same car but identical, other than color, to what we had.

My older Bro had the same BB Cougar in gold when we were teenagers. I beat that thing to death many a night
Talk about family car sleepers, one of my first cars I drove was a hand me down from my uncle. A big old black 4 door Plymouth SOMETHING ? with a BB Wedge Motor and a push button automatic transmission. You would shift by pushing a button on the dash and the sucker would chirp 2nd everytime
Then there was DADS 428 Pontiac Wagon, or my Malverne Cop cars (I bought two) They were Ply Fury's w/ 383 mag's. Ya I guess we can never forget there have been some serious family cars in the past. Ok I guess there may be a place in the market for it, but it clearly isn't my style.
Here's one I always liked

If you were lulled to sleep by the Biscayne’s rather sedate-looking exterior, it’s time you woke up and smelled the rubber! While the two-door coupe represented the economy special of Chevrolet’s full-size line, the Biscayne was anything but mundane when powered by the optional 427-cid V-8 engine, which produced 390-hp in its “street” form, and a whopping 425 ponies in its “special” version. It may have been the “family car” you didn’t mind driving because only you knew it’s true potential!

Well anyway. I actually bought an old Chevy Biscayne station wagon. Not becuase I wanted the car, but it had a 427 in it that I pulled and used for a flatbottom drag boat that I was building. Those were definitely sleeper cars. One of the fastest cars I ran across during those years was a built AMX. They were small, light and very quick with a 390ci motor. You would have never thought of it as a true muscle car, but this one was quick. Little did he know I had the ace in the hole with 427ci of pure big block muscle. He gave me a good run, but I still got him. I remember him scratching his head and probably wondering how he got beat by a 320ci Cougar.
