Question rich & detonating ???

Is it possible to run rich and still get detonation? I recently got a gadgetseller modified a/f gauge installed and yes I know it is not a wideband, but I feel it is fairly accurate for this comparison. I currently have a '00 with 90mm, ram air, 4# lower, vb, & chip. When I run the chip I hear detonation. I have sent it back and got the fuel mixture set to be richer. Well it still does it, so I have been running without the chip. It runs great. Absolutely no detonation even when towing my boat up and down the hills. Now that I have the gauge I have turned the chip back on a few times to see what it shows. With the chip OFF the gauge reads in the middle of the gauge at full throttle. With the chip ON it reads well over into the green rich area and still detonates. What could cause this? What should I have my tuner adjust? Any help is greatly appreciated.

yes possible, doenst matter how rich you run it if your using 87 octane (just as an example) youll get detonation. Sounds like you need to lower your timing some, but im no tuner so who knows, you have a place close by that you can get a nice dyno tune? Itll be fun in the least .

Even with 100+ octane............with too much timing you will detonate also.

TIMING

Yup, timing, in addition to some other things, will do it.

So is there an easy way to check timing?

AutoTap?

Maybe hook up to AutoTap also and see what pops out.

'Tap doesn't check timing.

You need a scan tool for the OBD 2 port. It will graph your timing charts.

Thanks guys. I'll send the chip back in for another reburn and get a couple degrees pulled.

Timing too far advanced--probably but it could also be too 'hot' of a plug ? A 160* thermostat would help too.

I guess I should have mentioned the TR6s and stock thermostat. Good point.

My autotap plugs into the ODBII port and reads timing advance in real time... My ease did it, too.
