Hello everyone, I am new here. I own a 2001 Lightning. The only modifications I have is a JDM Cold air intake kit and a hypertech programer III. I want a good sounding exhaust does anybody have a borla ? If so how does it sound? Any recommendations is apreciated Thanks!

I had the Borla before I switched to the Silver Bullet from JDM. The fit and finish of the Borla can't be touched. They have a nice unique tone under medium and hard throttle acceleration; but, they are only slightly louder than stock. They would sound better behind headers and high-flow cats, I'm sure. Without the headers and cats though, you would probably like the Bassani better, or maybe one of the different magnaflow systems that are available from either JDM or REM. Most of the supporting venders carry the Bassani, if that is your preference.
There will be a lot of opinions on what system is the best. In the end, make sure you hear the system you want, before you chose one over another.

Go with straight pipes. nothing is louder, it is loud adn raspy and much cheaper. i have had many catbacks and i like the straight pipes the best. Get any nice tips and weld them on. If you cant weld your exhaust shop will do it. If you like it loud, that is the way to go.

I have the Borla... sound is very nice outside the truck... no real noticible noise gain inside the truck.
Just a little deeper... fit and finish is excellent... installed myself in the garage.... took only about an hour... and that was because 30 minutes is tugging the stock muffler off!
I am really pleased w/ the Borla!

I put the Borla on my 03 Lightning last weekend.
I had one previously on my 99 Lightning and liked it.
Why did I do it again?
Why didn't I get the Magnaflow? Tough call...The Magnaflow system is very nice as well...but I didn't want an overly loud system.
I forgot how lousy it (the Borla) sounds at WOT when it is new. It does get better as you put more miles on it. When new it kind of sounds like a blatting sound....Great sound at idle and cruising though. Also...I didn't want to wake the neighbors up everytime I go out.
Finish was excellent. The system is put together very, very well. Fit wasn't the greatest. I had to cut the lower pipe by 1/2" and open it a bit to get it to fit correctly due to the welded hanger on the cat pipe. So...their tolerences aren't perfect but then again, I wasn't expecting it to be.
HOWEVER....I have an idea as to why that "blatting" sound is happening. It is in fact the phantom tips on that system. The openings are smaller than the actual tip. In July, I am going to order a set of intercooled tips with a larger opening, weld them in and this should help the system sound a bit better at WOT. Tips can make a bit of a difference on the overall sound of the system. This worked on my previous vehicle which had a similar setup with that sytle of tip. I had this same sound so, I put the larger tips on and it just sounded 100% better. Strange as it may seem....
Gains? Definitely more power in the 3000 RPM up area. You can especially feel the truck breath better on the highway when you stomp on it.

Borla says they designed their muffler to flow better than stock. They said the muffler didn't need to be 2.5" out of the muffler because the further the exhaust gas travels the less space it needs due to cooling. I wrote concerning the size over a year ago.
