"it's all in the tune..."
"it's all in the tune..."
I've have a Diablo single program chip for about 7 months and had a pretty aggressive tune on it pretty much all the time. I got it re-burned a few times because I wanted it just right. 1 time the line pressure was way too high, and another time the timing was too high. I was getting detonation. The last tune I had in the chip was from Paul over at Razor's Edge and it was closest to perfect out of all the 5 or 6 re-burns I've had. It was burned for the 80mm pro m and in the cold I was getting very bad detonation. But with that program, the 80mm pro m and a 4# pulley I ran a 12.64. I'm not sure what the air fuel numbers were or anything more than the timing was at around 18 or so. I asked for the line pressure to be stock, but the only thing I didn’t like about the chip was how it would still sling into gear when I was at quarter throttle or no throttle even. It would hit 2nd and 3rd and even overdrive hard. Anyway, I had great service with both Johnny from JLP and Paul from REM. Thanks to both for all the help.
Recently I got a 2.80 upper pulley and a super chip flip chip. So now I can have 2 programs 1 for street and 1 for race. I figured with a flip chip, the differences in the 2 programs would be night and day. I got the chip back, plugged it in, and both of my programs are pretty mild. I got them burned from Mark over at LFP when I got the upper pulley.
I installed the 2.8 upper, single blade throttle body, 90mm mass air, traction bars and the new chip and went for a test drive...
I was happy with the throttle responsiveness the truck now had, and I really was happy the truck wasn’t banging gears. But I think I have 2 mild programs on my chip. You can tell the 2 apart just barely. I could feel the Diablo a lot more than I feel both programs on the super chip… everyone’s going to say get a re-burn and make the super chip more aggressive. That’s pry what I am going to do, I just want to know what program I should have on the race side with my mods.
My question is, with the 4# lower and the 2.8 upper, if I left 1 mild program on 1 side, how aggressive can I go on the race side?
I am used to a more aggressive tune from my diablo experience.
What are my options now that I have the 2.8 upper and the flip chip? I want to take advantage of having the flip chip. I'm not sure if it's because it is so hot here (80-100 degrees) but my truck doesn’t feel as aggressive as it did even after the pulley swap.
On the race program...
- How high can my timing be with the 4# lower, and 2.8 upper?
- Can I up the line pressure a little? if that's what I’m used to. How bad is upping it 2-3 more #'s or so vs what is it 6#'s stock?
- Where should my air to fuel ratio be?
- How much better should I do at the track on Race mode? 1-2 tenths?
- the 1-2 shift torque reduction is out
I guess I just want a little milder version of the program I had on the Diablo and a little more aggressive of a tune I have now on the super chip. But I want it to go well with the 4#er and the upper. I am new to the flip chip world, to those who have flip chips, what is the difference in times you run if you’ve ran with both race and street???
I've always said safety/motor comes b4 speed. So that makes me want to just leave it where it is, and be happy I am even where I am! But i'm not happy with what I have on the chip now, so I need advise on what to let the tuner know I really want. And b4 I do that I need to know the most I can get on my chip, while keeping the internals of my truck... internals! Thanks, Shane McKenna

I agree with the above posts, you have spent alot of money on mods now spent it on the tune. One of the guys from NLOC just picked up 30 hp and 60fpt after a JDM dyno tune, I don't know any mods to give you so much for so little.
15-16 degrees for your daily street program
18-19 for your track/agressive street program
5500 RPM Shift Points
5800 RPM Limiter
200 MS between shifting
Torque Reduction turned OFF
then let the tuner work their magic with
the tip in, Air Fuel, etc.....
Some go as aggresive as 19-21 for the track side,
but only if you plan to run Race Fuel

I have a chip question also. Can the transmission downshift points be altered? I feel like I have to apply too much throttle to get the truck to downshift.
Also, can the non-WOT shift points be altered? I find myself in OD on 25 MPH roads.

I asked that question to differant tuners over and over myself.
"If the power is already dropping off,
why do I want to shift past that point ???"
The answer is actually quite simply, it's more important to be at the correct RPM when you hit 2nd + 3rd, than it is to go over Peak HP in 1st. To lose momentum during a shift
(and then have to build it back up again) would lose you more ET, than you going "a little over" the peak dyno'd HP ratings in 1st.
It is a fine line and balancing point, too much is no good, too little is no good, and I'm sure many have differant views on it. But one thing is for sure, A L's peak performance and HP may be dropping off after 5K, but mine is still pully like a Mo Fo all the way up to 6, and when it hits the next gear, it's right where I want it to be
My Nitrous Program is however set at 5250 RPM
Unfortunatly my L has a mind of it's own with shift points,
and each of the 10 programs I've had seem to shift always higher than they are set for. I kinda like it though

So how much timing are you running on the juice rob? Just using your street proggie?
As I found out it TOTALLY fell flat on it's face with 11-14 degrees of timing on the juice. So I ended up running juice with the "then" all gas program that was 16 degrees, I then ran a 12.2, a 12.3, and (2) 12.0's like that.
Now I have the Nitrous Program at 16 degrees
and my 24/7 daily street/track program at 18 degrees.
The Nitrous Program uses a lower shift point, a higher rev limiter, a richer a/f, a differant tip in, and some minor tranny tweaking.
Which also makes it perfect for looooooooong WOT Runs on all gas on the street
Haven't gotten back to the track yet, but I'm expecting good numbers and it has ZERO detonation on pump gas, and I'm currently running 6lbs of extra pulley on 94 Ultra.
Mine seems to really like timing for whatever reason ???
JeffsLightning,
Where is there a dyno around here that can tune via a chip? You talking about the place we went to in naperville? Please let me know.....if you have too, send me an e-mail at tpw@surfnetinc.com.
Thanks,
Tom
