Hey, I actually know Dave (that's what his name really is, not Derrick) Herron. That probably wasn't one of his better moments in audio, but for the most part the guy was pretty much a genius when it came to music, electronics and speakers. He was also a car buff and was really into the early Mustangs(1964 1/2 to 1966). He had some very quality cars. I haven't seen him for awhile, but I imagine he's still into cars and audio.

Oh, I also got the meaning of your post.

A few years ago, all the rage in CD audio was “greening” The purported theory was painting a green magic marker line around the edge of a CD would keep the “light from leaking” and give better sound. Every one jumped up to endorse it, several music professionals talked about how much better it sounded, a quote attributed to One Derrick Herron of Audio Alternative in Portland OR, stated
“(Greening) is absolutely spectacular. I just did it to a Great White CD and was absolutely amazed. You’d think that the digital recordings would improve the most, but on Phil Collins’ Face Value, an analog recording, I was flabbergasted-literally astounded”

From The Greening of America, CD Style, J.D. Considine Baltimore Sun, April 1990

(Memo to Mark S…. that is called a citation, and using them when you quote another person’s written work will give you some protection from getting sued for copyright infringement, just thought you needed to have that explained, GBE)

This theory was around several years, all kinds of supposed “experts” talked about how good it was, some even came up with the “best color” to use (an Eberhard-Faber Design Art #225) for best results. It was all the rage and an accepted truth. Then one day one of the guys who developed CD technology saw it. (another note to Mark S, by “developed” we here mean he actually took part in making an idea a product, he knew how it worked and all that stuff. We’re NOT using the meaning of the word “developed” in the sense that you understand it, GBE)
Being someone who knew better, well, CDs were pretty new back then, not a lot of people didn’t understand that digital was a series of binary responses, yes-no, off-on, 0-1 etc… that in fact, the reader either gets the signal and you get perfect sound, or you don’t get the signal, and the CD skips, those are your only two options. Light does not leak around the edges of a CD, and an Eberhard-Faber Design Art #225 will not make your CDs sound any better. In fact, the solvent in a magic marker will slowly dissolve a protective coating on the disc and ruin it.

Just thought I’d bring this up, and let you take from it what you will.

Actually, it was to condone piracy, but we wont go there.

Is there some herb being smoked and gregg is being greedy or what?

For some reason, i feel this is a stab at BOP.

I hate reading useless threads, and can't believe that Gregg would start one. It nice that several people get it. The rest of us have no clue. Next time just email them directly.

The article was well written though.

**** seems to be in the loop most of the time. (No criticism to you ****, just praise) adn he said it might be a shot at BOP. I am pretty sure it pertains to the reflash i have been reading about. If you take it in that context i makes sense. That is my guess which could be totally wrong. Its jmho take it for what it is worth. I geuss we will see about this reflash when it comes out. I dont think greg was taking a cheap shot. I think he might know more than others and is just warning. This is all speculation though from how i interpreted it. Hope this helps some people in the dark. Remember, i am just another person in no way tied to any of this and have no idea teh truth of what this post is about.

Or LFP (Mark Silvestri)?

I too would like to know what is going on. I could speculate but I won't jump to conclusions....

You all have it wrong. After reading this post, I went out and bought about 300 Eberhard-Faber Design Art #225 Green markers. I have noticed supreme musical quality improvement, but this gave me an idea. After coloring all the inside of my intake with this wondermarker, I picked up 4/10ths on the quarter mile!

While on a marker fume induced high, I colored my entire truck because it's advanced ink will make the exterior, as my extreme marker fumed high calculations prove, 5 times more slippery. The marker not only deflects air, but does not let the light escape which proves a much deeper and shinier paint. After dropping the drag co-efficent and increasing all that boost I moved from a 13.2 to a 11.5.

I plan to coat the pistons with the marker as I hypothesize it will provide a much more efficent burn, not letting the spark escape. I hope to be in the 10's after this.

Oh, by the way, I am now a liscenced Eberhard-Faber Design Art Dealer. Please visit my website as I now sell Eberhard markers. Be sure to check out the "New" section, which has added space-aged NASA approved polymers, named "CRUNKymers", for a mere $83.95 a marker. A standard Lightning will require about 500 pens, but it has been Dyno proven to give 250 RWHP and almost 300 pounds of torque! You can not go wrong with the Eberhard-Faber Design Art markers. Derrick Herron, a well known uhhh...... Nuclear Physicist or something raved
“I was flabbergasted-literally astounded”

Sale! These things are moving fast! Only $49.99 a marker! I take cash, credit card, deeds to houses, and unwanted and soon to be enslaved children.

God, what the hell am I talking about?

Wow, y'all read a lot into that, sorry I seemed to be teasing you, but that wasn't the point. I also no absoltely nothing about any pending mod, it was a very general thing, it pertains to all mods to some extent. I will admit I kind of took a stab at someone, but I don't want to imply some deep dark secret, I don't have one. I'm writing something about marketing for an old prof to use in a case study and my reserch brought me across this story. I just thought it was very familiar with what goes on here alot, and thought I'd throw it out there.

My point, and the Derrick (David) Herron is a very good illustration of it, is somethings can be made out to be "the next big thing" and you can find some very reputable people to stand behind them. But this guy, whom I only know through a book I read about marketing, was, and is apparently very respected in Music circles, he saw something that seemed logical (cuts Light leakage, it has some semblence of coherence) and he was all gung ho for it. The point is, he was a music guy, and this was 1990, when music guys were mostly still "analog" and the ones who truely understood the technology involved where electrical engineers and computer geeks, who didn't know from what about music, but even though, they were the true "experts" because the technology wasn't about music at all, it was about digital information storage technology. The music guys didn't know squat about that, but everyone just assumed they did and they listened to them.

It's sort of the Emperor's New Clothes, and eveyone knows in that story, the one who was the last to know was the emperor.

For what it's worth, I don't know much about Engines, software, exhausts, etc... I just know transmissions. But before I go very far from there, I look real hard at what someone is trying to do, and I try to look behind the "music" guys and see if I can find a computer geek who might know better. It was an intersting thought.

G

(and I never said who Mark S was, y'all made an assumption there)

Scott, you came dangerously close to getting it right. The thing you messed up is it's isn't when someone figures it out, someone knows all along, but they don't know anyone doesn't know, when they "see" it, they see how nuts it all is and start telling people, it never occurred to them because they knew better than to even think that way to begin with, and when they finally hear about it (on the Greening, it went on for several years) they see and then tell people how silly it is.

This thread is informative, but pointless. If your going to say something then say it.
