**Need help with opinions on diagnostic software/devices**

With two trucks in the driveway, and some recent minor issues, i was contemplating investing in some diagnostic software/devices.

I currently have an actron code reader.....which is great for just that....but it's not enough.

I'm looking for something that will provide real time data. Specifically reading from the sensors, being able to detect misfires and pinpoint which cylinder it is ect.

Anybody have any recommendations or experience with anything like this.

I saw on svtperformance that some of the cobra guys got their hands on a palm pilot and cables to hook up to their diagnostic port.

The dsm crowd has been tuning w/ palm pilots for years.

Been messing with AutoTap quite a bit as of late. Pretty nice

Running on a P2/300mHz 256RAM Win2K

AutoTap has a Palm version available also.

Wait for the Diablo Predator, It will allow you to use it as a Code Reader, diagnostic device, and also allow you to see your A/F, Timing, Shift Points, Rev Limiter, Transmission Pressure, Etc, It will also allow you to change each and every one of them and soooooo much more. Including resetting "and shutting off" a Code if one should ever pop up, All through the diagnostic port.
It will cost $400.00 - $500.00 give or take

No more Chip needed, it comes with any custom chip program you want on it, BUT then you can tweak it anywhere you want it, and at any time, and even reset it to Stock before bringing it to Ford for Service, without ever touching the computer (OR CLEANING A TERMINAL) or them knowing it was Chiped OR TOUCHED

hmm

i've been reading up but no one seems to be able to answer my questions. I need something a little in depth.

The coil pack gods have frowned upon my driveway and i want something that will be able to tell me which cylinder the problem is on ......rather than playing games.

My father's truck has a misfire at idle, and breaks up bad around 1500 rpms. It's an 03 with about 2k miles on it. Just put TR6's in. Pulled all the plugs again and replaced them, still doing it. Unplugged the coil packs 1 by one and none made a huge impact.

Real rich fuel smell at idle too. Put it on a scanner and said it had a cylinder comming in and out, but this program wasn't updated for the 03 so it couldn't tell which one. Going into Ford this week to have them put it on their scanner to find the problem.

With 2 truck in the driveway, and all the Lightning owners i meet, it's worth investing in this.

I like the looks of the auto tap, just sent them an email with a few questions.

Well nothing will help with your coil pack problem. As far as I know, the Lightning doesn't keep track of cylinder misfires...

Any of the OBD-2 software works good. I got mine from www.obd-2.com and it was about $150.

There are a handful of "misfire" parameters listed in the enhanced ford ODBII diagnostics list. They do not work on my 02 Harley, so I suspect they won't on your L either.

I have an autotap, but I have tried the Ease Diagnostics also. (ease sucks!)
