LIGHTNINROD: i used mobil1 75w-90.

superfords:
chris! i was thinking the same thing about your fluid swap!!! i didn't think they had been in the lube long enough to "soak up" the friction modifier, but i figured you knew what you were doing. LOL
i also noticed your fluid was milky looking.. mine was dark brown.
i looked for your work number on here to call you & ask about the install, but i couldn't find it..

oh, what would happen if i put too much fluid in the rear end? i used 3 quarts to fill it up (via the ABS sensor)

BTW: the ABS sensor was filthy! i wiped the buildup off of it & put a little oil on the o ring when i installed it.

a few install notes.. all i did was take the spare tire off to get to the cover.. i did the install while the truck was on the ground.

i would think, with only 7000 miles, you would prolly need to add the friction modifier to whatever fluid you used..

superfords would know for sure...

Ok i work at a lube shop. Have been doing it a while. Use mobol 1 75W90. Use the ford diff additive as well. You can change it as often as you like. But every year or so with normal gear oil. sythetic is good for 100,000 miles. Fill till it come out the check plug. Let it stop dripping and plug it back up. Also throw some tamper seal on it. Make sure to put the friction modifier in before you fill it.

sorry, I'm here....

the ford spec is 75-90 synthetic I believe.

this should be the part number: XY-75W90-QFEHP

I don't think it really matters though.

I use the Ford stuff because we have it here at work and it's cheap for me to get (read free).

I actually think I probably used 75-140 Ford synthetic in mine when I did the cover, but again, I believe the spec is 75-90.

you could use mobile 1 or redline or amsoil or whatever you want, but I wouldn't expect much difference either way. Ford has gone to synthetic fluids in some cases, I assume for fuel economy reasons.

overfilling COULD cause a leak either from the wheel/axle seals or from the pinion seal. extreme overfilling could cause fluid to spray out of the axle vent after it gets hot.

if you are concerned about it just pull the fluid level plug and let it drain untill it stops, this will put the fluid at the correct level.

good luck.

later,
chris
