Lightbulb Lightning vs Camaro SS

I was told that a stock SS can beat a stock Lightning? Is this true? Just for the sake of argument lets say they are both the same year (both 2000 or both 2001) Please clear this up for me, it has me kinda worried that I will be beat by a car that my '67 Mustang could beat! If the SS is faster what mods would I need to beat one?

Those cars are very fast. I would say its up to the driver in the 1/4 and on the highway they will walk away from us.

Toss on a chip, filter, pulley, and say bye-bye to lowly SS boy as soon as the light goes green

God I love torque

at the track if the driver of the SS knew how to bang gears, i believe he'd do mid 13s compared to your high 13s (for a 2000). however on the highway because of the law of physics he'd walk away from you after a while (probably 70ish?)

to beat one you'd only need chip, filter and pulley. anything to get you in the low 13s. since we have immense traction problems, you could seal the deal with shift kit, weight reduction, etc..anything that will allow you to squeeze into the 12s...

Hearing this is sad! I guess all those guys that say they can beat a vette are either full of it or have spent tons of money on their trucks.

Another thing, I would think that an SS would have even more problems with traction then an L because the SS weighs even less in the rear.

I have a 01 L and my girlfriend has a 01 SS. I went 14.0 @ 99 stock and her SS went 13.3 @ 105. Granted i ran in the dead heat of south florida summer and she got her run in during a nice 50* night thanks to a cold front. But stock for stock, in similar conditions, i still would have to side with the SS.

Well its all up to the driver....We don't NEED a chip, filter, pulley to beat one, i've beaten a couple at the track, and have gotten beaten as well, but let me tell you they were all mostly close races.

Here in S.Florida in the dead heat my best was a 13.6@100 bone stock, and the best runs I ever got from a F-Body was a 00 Camaro(Free Mods,Lid) that had run a 13.52 to my 13.66 he caught me right at the end, same thing happened with a Ram-Air(Free Mods,Lid) and he ran a 13.68 to my 13.71.

Other cases where I won were close but by like .2, except i've never had a close race with an SS, at the track i've always blown them away, of course I believe it was due to the driver.

Bottomline, Stock for Stock it's a close race,i'd say though out of 5 races the F-Body takes 3 with a GOOD driver...Chip,Filter,Pulley and 5 out of 5 for the L.

On the highway i've raced a couple LT1's.... the last one I raced was a 96 T/A with a 125 shot from a 40.... twice I stayed ahead by 2 lengths(with current mods) to 130 when i shut off..Mizecca can attest to that I have also lost to a Z28 but only by 2 lenghts when I was stock to about 135 also. Ohh and by like 3 from a Supra(which let off btw lol) and the worst was from a Z06 I gave up at 110 as he was GONE

Although I have never been walked on the Highway by a F-Body, I wouldn't push my luck, aerodynamics and speed of 160 is their territory. I've just been lucky but usually I don't and wouldn't race an F-Body on the Highway.....thats what the SNAKE is for

When my Lightning arrives I'll have to race my SS and see what happens although I'm not sure how I'm going to drive both vehicles at the same time .

Merry Christmas to all ! --Hugh

My '99 SS went 13.3 @ 106.43 bone stock. It was an M6. If the car you're talking about is an M6 and the person knows how to drive, you will have a tough race on your hands. It'll be tough with an A4 too.

One other thing to keep in mind is that there are slight HP differences between the '99 - '00 - '01/'02s. The later models were given the LS6 intake and EGR delete which bumped them up a few notches in HP/TQ. Some people were running high 12s stock in their '01/02s. Average drivers were running mid-low 13s.

Good luck and let us know how you make out!!

See ya'

Dan

With a decent launch and my fairly aggresive chip and cold air I've beat more than a few SS's in street duels, light to light. Mine's a 2002. Face it, some of our trucks are just quicker, for whatever reason. Some guys run stock times in the low 14's while others run in the 13's. There are more than a few who have broken the 12 second barrier without a pulley. Good luck.
