Talking What about Brush Guards.....

As a fairly new owner of a beautiful KR edition (Brother with HD) I have inquired as to the different mods people have added... I have added a berlin tonneau cover hinged (it was fairly cheap) and a wood dash kit....burlwood....

I am thinking of a brush guard, but not sure...whatcha think...any problems...

I had an expy with a guard and it left ugly marks on the bumper...

Thanks all

Steve

Skagel and I both have the Manik in Stainless... Definately my preference.

As for mounting, most of the quality ones mount to brackets on the frame that exit through the tow hook openings. (including the Manik)

the look of the manik is deffinately more eye appealing, but hums at speeds over 35. the Westin....which is the guard I originally had does not hum, but does not flow with the curvature of the grill and is not as eye appealing, but does protect the truck really well in head on collisions. not that I would know anything about those.

Sarah -

Where did you get your Manik Guard -

I looked at www.Manik.com to see but was unable to locate one. There are only a few truck accessory stores in SC (Or atleast near me). I didnt know if you got online or what. -

Thanks

Steve

I bought mine on ebay, this guy has a ton of them and they look nice. The KC lites that came with are rectangular and look a little dated, so I mounted some Hella FF300 driving lites on it and they look good. I'll try to post some pics tonight. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=1856287268

Guys,

I don't want to sound stupid, but I've had 4x4s since the late '70s and I have never ever needed no stinking grill guard.

Just what's all the fuss about?

If you aren't going on a friggin' African Safari, then why would you want to hang a 1 or 2 hundred pound piece of chrome plated steel tubing out on the front end of your truck???...Just to hang some lights???...So it makes it a real PIA to open your hood or work on your grill or headlights???

Please help me out here; I'm just lost as to what's the return on the investment, just to be cool?

Each to his own but I would like to think that folks that can afford a KR must have some damn good reason to put on of these monstrosities on their beautiful truck.

Don't kill me all at once

I could prolly do without one, however I go antelope and deer hunting in some knarly places, waist-high sagebrush and so forth. I feel better driving thru these places with a brush guard, but I should have prolly spent the money on some good 6 ply tires. It does serve as a light bar, I live where the buffalo roam, as well as where the deer and antelope play. Elk, too, but they have a lousy PR guy and never get into the songs.
Seriously, l don't feel comfortable driving at night without driving lights too far from town. Not crappy fog lights, but serious lights pointed of into the sides of the road to spot animals.
I wash. polish and take care of my truck as much as anyone, but I do use it as a truck. My neighbor was teasing my the weekend before last about how dirty it was and how she's never seen it dirty for more than one day.
Oh, yeah. I like the look of it, also!

Not killin' ya, but I have some responses....

First, mine weighs in at 40 lbs shipped... it's not the gnarliest of brush guards (a-la Ranch Hand) but it's good enough for what I want it to do.

First, it makes an ideal place to mount a couple lights.

Second, I've seen trucks that have hit deer both with and without a guard. Which one do you think survives with the least amount of damage? Granted the one with the guard was far from spot-less, but it certainly fared better.

Third, It's absolutely no trouble to open your hood. It doesn;t get in the way at all, and I'm sure many guard owners attest to the fact that you can use it as a convenient step to reach the back of the engine compartment.

Fourth: Ever know anyone who's rear ended someone with a guard? [...ahem, ahem, Skagel, ahem... sorry, had something stuck in my throat] Instead of getting a new guard and bumper for her (and one clear corner where the guard cracked it), and replacing a bumper on Mlite's truck, she would have needed a new bumper, all new brackets, new grille and surround, headlights, parking lights, and possibly a hood and a fender or two, not to mention Mlite's bumper, tailgate, taillight (or lights) and probably a rear quarter or two... I think it did its job pretty well.

Fifth: It creates the perfect place to install a winch mount (and, in fact, the Manik is rated for winches up to 9000 lbs, Ranch Hand, I think makes a 12000 lb rated guard(?))

Well, those are my reasons.... Oh, and forgot #6.... Stainless is SWEET! especially for those of us in the rust belt....

Now if they just made a guard for the back... I know a certain afore-mentioned someone that could use one back there...
