It's a heater that heats the engine block.

Hope that was useful.

Sorry for the Christmas levity !

It connects to the electricity supply to keep the water in the block at a relatively warm temperature compared to the ambient temperature.
Useful in cold climes to save wear and tear on the engine which occurs from very cold starts...also makes starting easier.

Shouldn't think you need one in your location !!

I might need to put one of these in my truck. Anyone know the complexity of putting one in? It is 1 degree outside right now and my truck gave me a heck of a time starting this morning. I'm afraid it's going to do the same when I leave work this evening. It took about 10 minutes of cranking it every 25 seconds or so for it to start and stay on. Any ideas what I can do to alleviate this is the future?

Of course it doesn't help that it is parked outside instead of in a garage. That will happen as soon as I buy a house.

you may already have one. look up around the front bumper and fender area for an extension cord. ford installed block heaters on alot of trucks. they hide the plugs faily well.

if you have front tow hooks, the block heater cord will be on the drivers side, at the bottom, I never would have found it if my fog light had not burnt out. ( fixed threw warenty )

So if you see the plug does that mean you have a block heater? What else should you look for?

For the right price, Daveman will come to your house and breath heavily on the engine block to warm it.

You could just run a 75+ watt light bulb off of an extension cord to your truck and put it near the block.. It works just as well if it's not windy.

Well, we shall see how it fairs for the next few weeks until I close on my house. Closing's supposed to be mid-January. In the meantime, I'll have to cross my fingers that the temps don't go below zero again like they did a couple days ago. It took me 10 minutes to crank my truck up. It's probably a good thing I have the 0w20 synthetic oil, otherwise I may have done some damage.
