Question POLL: overdrive switch trim ring

Those with auto trannies, how many of you have had the trim ring around the overdrive on/off button at the end of the shifter fall off in your hand?

Mine has just come off today for the second time. The first time was still under warranty and the shifter boot had torn also, so the service dept replaced the entire shifter assembly. This time, it is not under warranty (shifter boot has torn again also).

Those who have reinstalled it...is it ok to superglue it back on? since it will not stay on once it has come off.

No.

Do you wear a ring on your right hand?

As I recall it has a couple of snap arms. If it has broken off I would get a another from Ford parts for a couple of bucks rather than superglue.

My truck has been ok but the same parts were used on my wife's Windstar. The ring came off a couple of times and I learned to grab the lever with the end of it showing thru my hand rather than covering it up. My college ring was banging it off.

I don't know how in the world you have torn up two boots!
(anger management?)

Well, I try to keep the ring on the right hand, but my wife keeps making me put it back on my left hand. As far as snap arms....she said she'd snap my arms off if she catches that ring on the wrong hand again! Sheesh....women....go figure.

anyways...so you have a college ring, eh? So what was your major? Smartypantsology??? hehehe

OK. nuff jokin' around. I think that I put the end of the shifter in the palm of my hand when I shift, and that is probably the reason it keeps coming off. The little snap arms are too wimpy to hold up to much abuse. I broke it off my '92 a couple of times also.

Love to read your posts, Raoul. keep 'em coming, grand Poobah!

Well....think I'll go abuse my boot now...feel a temper coming on..........

Mine falls off in my hand, on the floor, on the seat..... all over the place.

No ring on my right hand (ever), just the one on the left one. There are no obvious broken parts on the ring and I can "hear" it snap back into place. It just won't stay there.

Me too

I also have no rings on my right hand, but that darn trim piece falls off almost once a week. I think I am going to try to put a bit of clear silicone on it and see if that will hold it in place.

Never has fallen off in the 50+k miles I've driven the truck. Mgw sells a billet cover that should stop that, if your inclined towards billet interior parts. Here's a link.,,,,98

Thumbs up got a new one

Stopped by the dealer today as I was driving by anyway and got a new trim ring (labled "CAP-TR 320). This one is a different design. Instead of little snap arms, it was a continuous circular "wall", for lack of a better term, with a gap at the front where the OFF idicator light is located. Hope this new style fastening design works better.

Mine broke off as well. I superguled it back about 10K miles ago and have had no problems since.

Ring

As a matter of fact mine came off in my hand yesterday... again. It is starting to get annoying. Think I will look into the new cap design. Thanks for the heads up on that one
