Is there a leaking rear window fix?
Hey guys and gals (Yes gals drive trucks too),
I just got a 97 3-door and while in the process of gutting the interior for cleaning I noticed that I have rear sliding window that leaks. It was pretty evident that it had gotten wet in the truck but I didn't realize the source until then.
I have read up on the fact that the leak is well known. Ford even released a TSB on it. It appears as though the trouble comes from 2 areas mostly. The seal simply doesn't hold-up to the stress of movement of the cab plus the frame seems to have a cracking problem. I have found one crack in my window frame.
My question to you all is, is there a fix that we can take on ourselves? I took off all the nuts that hold the frame onto the cab but the glue seems strong enough to worry me about prying it much more than I have already. I inspected the seal and put some additional goop around the leaky area but that doesn't look like it will be good as far as stopping it. In fact if anything it looks as if it will hold water between the frame and the body helping rust get started.
Has anyone taken this problem on or know of anyone that has a successful solution?
As I see it my options are:
A) Complain to Ford about yet another inherent problem that they can't seem to do right the first time. Fight with them about it for untold weeks and probably get it screwed up by them if they do try and fix it.
B) Go to a glass repair place. I may indeed decide this is worth it.
C) Do it myself. I prefer C whenever possible.
Anyone wanna offer me their knowledge?

Had the same problem on the rear slider of my 97. Cracked right above the slider handle and leaked badly during rain.
Everyone I talked to said i could do one of two things: replace just seal or the whole glass. From what I was told at a glass shop, Ford used the wrong kind of glue seal. Cost me about $100 to get it done but haven't had any more problems since. The crack on my frame is just on the interior frame and no need to replace too. Good luck with yours.
