Smoothing and painting interior peices.

Hey guys

I have a 1998 f150 and was looking at painting some of the accent peices on the dash and on the doors. I searched the forums and couldnt find the answer i was looking for. I want to sand snd smooth the plastic peices but was wondering wat grit sand paper to use. I know you have to use a really fine grit but how fine and also what paint should i use so it doesnt flake.

I did this to mine and love it...my trucks 2300 miles away so im sorry i cant post pics yet..... i think a 200-300 grit and youll be fine...i used a 100 but i shoulda used lower....what i did was first prime it with a coat of grey primer...then used dupli-colors' vinyl and fabric spray paint...works great and no chips so far

impo its a pain in the A$$ to sand the dash smooth. i painted mine and left most of the texture on mine because i liked the way it looked and didnt want the dash to be too glossy and reflect off the windshield.

you will need a coarse grit paper to get the main part of the texture off and work your way to a finer grit paper to smooth it out. then i would use filler primer and then just krylon fusion.

i just used a 600 grit and scuffed mine up and shot it with adhesion promoter and krylon fusion black and its held up great.

Heres some pics let me know what you think.
Before:

Before Painting Used donor peices out of my wrecked truck thats why the colour is different:

After:

I also painted the grab handle on the passenger side but the camera crapped out as i was taking the picture.
Future painting peices are the deck surround and the top peice of the gauge cluster.

I was hesitant but they add a nice touch to the interior plus they break up all that tan.
