I give up--what's this thing on the center dashboard?

Does anyone know what the dashboard item is that is just left of the climate control dials and under the left center air vent? (see picture below) I've asked salesmen at the dealership and searched for an explanation in the owner's manual--but to no avail.

I thought it might initally be for holding coins--but they don't stay--plus, there is already a coin holder inside my center console arm rest box.

It's a good place for a gauge! Just pull on it with a good tug!

Thanks! I now remember seeing that "doohickythingy" option on the window sticker. Glad I got one in my new F-150--You don't get those fine accessories in a Dodge Ram 1500.

Is it a 2 inch or 2 1/16 gauge that fits in there?

Does anyone have any idea what the plug that is connected to the coin tray is for? It obviously isnt connected to anything, but what the hell is it supposed to be for?

being that the 4x4s have the electronic transfer case switch there, im going to say that its a coin holder and disactivated 4x4 plug on our 2x4 and simply a space holder on the manual 4x4

Mine is actually a phone holder...
i bought a cheap 15 dollar phone holder and instead of using the cheapo vent clips or the horrible windshield suction cup mount, i cut the mounting space off and molded it to the poor excuse for a coin holder and mounted the phone holder. I want to check the plug in the rear for a live 12v feed, but idk if we have one. So i want to run a 12v constant on wire from the center dash cig plug to a phone charger adapter that will be hidden beneath so that only the plug/wire for the phone comes through and mount that to the holder so i have a holster/charger in one that i can just slide my phone into.

Just the mounted holder itself helps out a ton now, once i get the charger hooked up ill be set.

NOTE, this will only work for those people who keep a phone longer than a year. i only upgrade every two years if even that. My current phone works great with my kenwood 8120 so as soon as i wire the charger i can leave the bluetooth on, recieve calls, and stream music from the phone straight to the stereo without worrying about batt life.
