Tracking down a squeak - 2004 interior panel removal?

I am attempting to track down an annoying squeak that seems to come from somewhere behind, and slightly above and to the left of, my head in my 2004 (new body) FX4 Regular Cab. It's a kind of funny squeak, like rubber or styrofoam, rubbing against something. Happens every time I hit a bump. Really, really annoying....really. I've been wiggling panels, the headliner, anything I can get my hands on, but can't reproduce it when I'm parked. I'm figuring it must be behind something?

So, I'm trying get panels off. Specifically, the corner pillar panel and the plastic coat hanger (but I have a feeling it won't stop there). I noticed the plastic fasteners don't look like the ones on my 98. There's no center piece you can press to release the fastener. There's a big round on in the pillar...or is it a plug with a screw behind it? I'm asking before I get into it because I really don't break anything while figuring out how it all functions and is put together. If someone knows how to go about this, or of a good source of information, or just another thread with information, please point me in the right direction. This squeak has GOT go... I will terminate it's command with extreme prejudice even if I have to tear out the whole interior to find it!...Thanks.

Nahhh, no tool box, it's a regular cab and I don't have anything back there right now. Sounds like it's coming from the left rear corner, near the ceiling. Thanks though...

Yeah, I can't tell where the hec it's coming from. But it does seem worse when it's cold. Yesterday I pulled the plastic panel that covers most of the interior space under the rear window (I found it basically just pops off). Seemed like the squeak was almost there, but not as bad. Same thing on the way into work this morning. I sure sounds like it's coming from inside the cab when I hear it though. I was looking at the rear window gasket arrangement and wondering if that might have something to do with it. I'm going to try to dab some silicone on potential areas and see what happens. BTW Looks like that pillar panel is held on by a bolt or screw that's covered by the round what-ever-ya-call-it plastic piece. I'll find out today when I try and take it off...

is there snow on your truck ???

between the bed and the cab ???

that was the source of my noise sounded just like yours , it was ice and snow between the cab and bed smashing together as i went over bumps.

vgl i hate noises in new vehicles.

Yeesh, I've had the ashtray, carpet behind the back seat, tailgate, overhead console, extended cab interior door handles all rattle in unison. Gotta love winter.

Yeah, I noticed all kinds of rattles when snow and or ice collected between the cab and the bed, but given the other post I got a feeling it's the window gasket. I still haven't sprayed it yet though. After I took the rear panel down I noticed all the foam block-isolator-thingies on it were falling off, so I glued them with silicone. I haven't reinstalled it yet, and have noticed how much sound it blocks from the rear wall. I'm thinking I should add some sound deadening back there while I'm at it.

Annoying squeak

I have the same problem with my 05 supercab. It happens when I don't close the passenger door hard. If I close the door hard and snug the squeak goes away. I believe it is caused by the rubber trim on the inside of the door rubbing on the painted surface of the cab. If I use a wax or sealant on the painted door jams, it stops the squeaking for a while. So, I would try using wax or a paint sealant on the inside of your door jams. I use Klasse All In One or Poorboys Natty Blue. They both leave a slick surface. I'm sure anything that leaves the painted surface slippery would work. Hope this works.

Yeah, the squeak came back today and I went crazy trying to track it down. I guess it's like an illness, I CAN NOT ignore it! I took the side panels off the pillars (it was a nut), and coat hooks out (what a pain). I sprayed silicone on the inner and outer window gaskets and even the door weather striping...to no avail. I loosened the rear window attaching nuts and sprayed some more, even tried to work some silicone grease around some of them. I also pulled the brake/bed light on top of the cab and put silicone grease on the gasket....nada. Squeak seemed to go away by the end of the night though, after much loosening, spraying, tightening around the window with repeated test drives in between. But somehow I don't think it's really gone. it's gone away before and then returned. I got a feeling it's still in there...waiting...

I just bought 05 supercab,SAME irritating squeek. Man that drives me nuts er bananas. I could not find it and my truck is under warranty so the dealer's squeek and rattle man is to be called in for service. I'll keep you posted IF he finds anything.

Ok, I think I might have got it...well most of it. I've been driving for a while now with the back panel and side pillar panels removed. So I verified that it's not the panels themselves squeaking. It was coming and going, but definitely coming back again.

One thing I tried to do was spray the door weather stripping with silicone. But immediately after I did it I heard, what sounded like, the same squeak, but in a slightly different position, right next to my head. Seemed to be coming from the top of the door seal. I have a feeling that silicone might aggravate the problem when to rubber or plastic things are rubbing against each other. The silicone seemed to kind of soak into the rubber pieces and they still seemed..."squeakable". So I applied silicone dielelectric grease to all the weatherstripping around all the doors. I was also careful to get all the overlapping seals where the doors meet. The squeak hasn't come back since.

In my obsessive search (I told ya, it's like a disease with me) I also identified some other potential "stealth squeakers". The plastic trim over where the seat belt, next to the head rest has an access cover on it that squeaks sometimes I noticed. There are also lots of wire bundles and stuff behind the panels in the "suspect area" (behind and slightly above my head) that could be making noise. I've also noticed (oh yeah, whole lotta noticing) that those vent doors in the back wall of the cab flap open and closed a lot, which makes noise, unless you've got the fan on. But that's probably only an issue because I've got the back panel off.

I'm planning on installing a stereo system, so I'm waiting on putting the panels back in until I run all the wires for an amp. I'm also going to try and stuff some extra insulation where ever I can. I can't really afford and dynamat type stuff right now. So I'm hoping some insulation crammed in where ever I can put it will do some kind of good.
