Post HELP! Dash noise driving me crazy@#^%$

Hello,

I have a 2000,F150,extended cab,4X4,Lariat,with the 5.4 triton.

About 3 months ago I started getting some dash noise Creaking, popping, like plastic being stressed, from about the center of the dash out to the passenger side. At first I thought the noise could be comming from inside the airbag compartment and who knows it still might. I have taken the center face plate off and removed the radio, driven around for a couple of days listening and tring to pinpint the noises. It's strange they actually seem never to be in the same exact place, but I do believe that the vehicle ducting is the culprit, and that their is indeed something loose in hte airbag compartment. Out of desperation I took it to the local dealer what joke that was they had it all day and then some, I was told they work on it for about 1/2 hour that's it and that was mainly driving it around a pasture thinking it was a rattle or something. So, out of pure desperation again i'm looking for some good detailed info on how to take the dash apart, first though, i'd like to remove the airbag from the passengers side (I ask the dealer mech but he would not tell me anything)
Thanks

My truck was unbelievably noisy inside. Ford dealer has been useless in resolving rattles.

I came close to dumping the truck is was so bad.

I've had my truck since april and I've only put 2600 miles on. The rattles where so bad I hated to drive it.

Before removing the air bag, you might try taking the door panels off and check the wires that run to your power mirrors and windows. I had what I thought was a dash rattle coming from the air bag area and it was these wires balancing off the inside of the door. Mine where not fasten to the door with the push in clips from the factory, along with several wires that run under the dash just flopping around.

I think the dash where it meets the door panel transmitts this noise to the dash area.

My glove box was also a source of an annoying rattle. I took it apart and dyna matted the inside of the plastic cover and the front metal panel.

The top removable cover on the top of dash also caused allot of noise I popped it off and dynamatted it on the back side. I also did the entire door panels front and rear including the inside of the plastic panels.

Truck is getting fairly quite now, after $100.00 of dynamat and about 40 hours of my time.

Good Luck, I know your frustration. I don't think the dealers want to spend much time running down rattles. Could be Ford won't pay them much for it.

I just noticed this folder and had the same problem with my old f150 (98 model). I lubed the dash. Sounds crazy>>> but, it worked. Just hosed the entire dash down with "Armour All" making sure to get all the plastic-on-plastic seams good and wet. wiped off the excess and the sound went away. It worked for me.

Now, I know that some will say don't armour all the dash, it'll make it crack. I live in Texas where it stays 100+ degrees and have never had a problem.

Question

alsored,
Understand from your post that you took the glove box apart. Is it true that it takes a special tool to remove the door? If not, how did you do it? I've also got an annoying rattle and I've traced it to that location. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!!

No nothing really special is required. If remember correctly you will need a 5/16 socket for the screws and a 1/4 inch drive ratchet. Is all I used

Open the Glove box.
Look at the top of the glove box for the stops that keep it from opening all the way.

They are plastic and located at the top left and right.

CAREFULLY push both stops to the right far enough to let the door come all the way open. You can now get to the three screws that hold it to the bottom of the dash.

Use care not to have your fingers in the wrong spot. You could mash one if the the box flies shut It will be under some tension from the spring.

Install is the the reverse.

Be sure to line the two pins before pushing the hinge flush with the dash support. You will need to keep pressure on the box lid while reinstalling it. One person can do it, but if you can find a helper it would make things easier.

While you have it off you might want to apply sound deadner to any place you can reach.

For you that still think the rattle is in the air bag area of the dash. You might try taking the passenger door panel off and driving around without it.

Only take you ten minutes and might make you very happy with your truck.

I had a friend in mine the other night and he said it was quiter than his wifes Mercedes. I have spent a lot of time and about $200.00 now getting this truck quite, but it was well worth it. Pi**ed that i had to do all this work on a new truck, but I now have one fine ride.

Question

Maybe a dumb question, but how do you take the door panels off?

I also have the same problem on my 97 S/C 4x4 ORP. I found the best way to solve this. In the middle of the dash there is a round ****. I just turned this to the right a little and I could no longer hear the noise. Just joking
As a veteran of having the "perfect" vehicle, you will never find this noise. Every time you bring it to the dealer it WILL go away. Trust me. ALl you will get out of having the dealer look fo the noise is a couple of days without your truck. Just my opinion. If you find an easy fix you can do yourself, please post it. I would like to get rid of the noise, I just don't want to go through all the aggrevation.

As far as the door rattles (squeaks coming from dash) I have seemingly fixed mine. In my truck, it was the door panels making all the noise, and the fix is fairly easy. Take off door panels...notice where the outer edge of the panel contacts the painted surface of the door. I put mylar tape here and also where the stand off posts touch the grey paper material stuck to the door. My truck always made more noise when it was cold (the interior, not the engine) And on warm sunny days, the rattles were virtually non-existant. Doors havent squeaked since i put the tape around the edges.....

I have '92 F150 and it has been popping for the last three years. I finally found what was happening!!! The right front mounting bracket at the door post broke and then the center of dash starting popping. The dash is now beginning to jump up and down as I go down the highway. I am on my wat to the juck yard to take out a dash unit to replace mine. I guess you just have to keep check on the bolts and tighten them??

Have a great day in JESUS!!!
