Inside door handle broke

Inside door handle broke
i know this may seem odd but the other day i went to get out of my truck and the door handle just falls in to my hand. I didnt pull hard on it or anything and nothing on it looks broke. anyone have any ideas? I'm not that heavy in the hole mechinics area so some advise in how to take the door panel off to fix it would be of great help as well

i've got an '03 model, so i'm not sure if there are any differences.
on mine, i just pop off the plastic piece that covers the window switches, the trim piece that goes up one side of the door, and the small piece that goes around the door release handle. they do take some effort to remove....every time i do i'm afraid i'll break them.
then look around for screws. if i remember right i have 2 at the bottom of the door panel, 1 at the door release handle, and 1 that was covered by the upper trim piece.
when all the screws are out i can just lift the panel up a little, then pull it towards me and it's off.
once the panel is off it should be pretty obvious if the handle broke or if a screw just came loose.
