To HID or not to HID

I'm been mulling over putting HIDs in 2004 scab, and after reading thread after thread I'm still on the fence.

My main reason for looking at HIDs are the increased light output, which would be handy on the country roads I find myself on some nights.

But I'm a little apprehensive about putting in HIDs, because of the all quality issues I've read about, and since there's about a million vendors, it's hard to narrow down a reputable vendor selling quality HID retro fit kits.

I'm also looking at the Philips CrystalVision Ultra bulbs, the OSRAM Night Breakers and the Sylvania SilverStar Ultras.

So, anyone have an opinion? I'm at the point where I'm having information overload. Can someone recommend a reputable HID vendor, or will one of those three bulbs be enough for my needs?

thanks! sorry if i'm

I'll be the first to say don't put HIDs in reflector housing. I'm guessing if you read alot that you read that they glare. If you really want good light then do a projector retrofit. That's the best and only way to go HIDs in my book. But since you asked for a good vendor I would look at The Retrofit Source. They have a good line up of products

Now if you wanna stay halogen i would suggest the Phillips you listed or GE night hawk platinums. They will give you the most usable light. Don't buy any halogens with a blue tint on the. That hinders output.

thanks guys. I'd read plenty of places not to run HID in non HID housings, but everyone and their brother sells a kit to do exactly that.

I did take a look at powerz69 thread on retrofitting and that helped a lot to figure out what's involved.

I've been looking at the projector kits at The Retrofit Source, and the all require heavy modification to the headlight housing. Does anyone make a projector that plugs into the 9008/H13 socket? I know I'll still have to separate the housing to install, but I'd feel a lot better about it not having to cut and feel like I'm guesstimating the installation.

Use the mini h1 6.0 kit. That's what i have except i have the 5.0. They are the easiest projector to retrofit with a great, wide low beam and a pretty decent high beam. They pretty much plug into where your 9008 is with only a little bit of cutting just to the back if the head light. Do some searching on them.

They sell it because they wanna make money. They don't care if it blinds people.

People sell guns too, without concern for what others are going to do with them.

As far as lights I have a pair already retrofitted for sale posted in the classifieds.

Yep. The corny thing about doing that are examples like the 99-04 era Mustang GT I was passing on the beltway on the way home last night.

Hit a dark patch of roadway, since the t-storms earlier knocked the lights out along the highway. So, I'm passing this Mustang with yellow fogs (okay, that's actually something the eyes can pick up), but some obnoxious glare from the green looking (I assume blue ~6000k HIDs with yellowing lenses made then end up green...brilliant!) lights knock me for a momemntary loop in the dark.

My guesstimate was that car only had about 5-6 feet of usable light on the road and the rest was glare, hence why he slowed own after I passed him. It was all in my mirrors shooting back at him and not on the road were it would help him.

So, point is...if your HID set-up doesn't look anything like what comes in those luxury cars from the factory, you're likely doing it wrong. Many do it wrong on the cheap.
