on startup after long period at rest, AC not engaged, get noise like 2 pieces of metal rubbing together after about 30 sec to 1 min stops. When engine compartment is up to temp and engine is reved, AC engaged sometimes get thumping rattle noise for a second or 2, AC is cold and blowing good. If this is clutch, can it be changed without removing compressor from vehicle?
Good thing you caught that bearing. I let mine go too long, the bearing failed and the pulley seized, locking the serpentine belt. My truck got a ride home on a flatbed the next morning courtesy of AAA.....

remove bolt and pull with fingers, thats pretty much it for the clutch, watch out for shims, shims are needed to achieve .018 to .030 clearance between clutch and pulley, to remove pulley a set of snap ring pliers is needed, remove snap ring, remove pulley by hand ( tight fit ) shouldnt need puller, when reassembling snap ring has beveled edge that faces out, these instructions are for FS10 compressor, my clutch
& pulley came with instructions, FX15 compressor a little different.

notchDano - did you replace you AC clutch yet? I had to replace mine (97 4.2L) last week. I found out in the middle of the job that I have the FX15 model. Was trying to find that second snap ring discussed in the instructions. Stumpped me till I turned over the instructions and found that some clutches do not have the second snap ring (FX15 model). My pully did not slide off with my hand. Had to pry it off with a small nail bar. Then had a hard time prying the coil off the compressor housing. Then working backwards, had to hammer the clutch coil back onto the compressor keeping it straight. Then hammer the pully on keeping it straight. Then bolt the clutch on with the 8mm bolt using different spacers to get the proper clearence. Reinstall the belt and no more squeal. It wasn't the 30 min job for me that everyone says but I goterdone.

Changed clutch plate and pulley, bearing was going in pulley, plate had separated. Good to go now
