A.C. Compressor troubles!

I have a 2000 ford f150 xlt and my compressor rattles and make a ticking noise when it engages. Now the problem has got a lot louder and theres another sound that happens when I start it and sometimes when im driving, its very noisy and vibrats bad, it starts then stops sometimes sooner then later.I think both noises are coming from the compressor. Can anyone help!

If you put AC gages on and the needle on the low pressure side is erratic that would indicate mechanical problems with the compressor. I would plan on replacing the compressor soon. Beware that it could lock up and take the serp belt out.

With the engine off, inspect the clutch hub to see if parts of it appears to be loose.

It sounds like you just have got a clutch hub that has separated. A replacement hub is only around $40 or $50 at any Ford dealer's parts department.

Mine has been like this since summer. Obnoxious as hell, but so far, pretty harmless. It started out as a loud, mechanical clicking noise whenever the clutch engaged.

If you pull the clutch hub off and you find yourself holding TWO pieces instead of one, you'll know this is the diagnosis.

What do you mean when you say the needle on the low pressure side, where is that?

Can anyone tell me if you can change the clutch without taking the compressor out of the truck. Thanks!

You have to put A/C gages on the low pressure side and the high pressure side to take a reading on the system. If the compressor is failing the low pressure side will have a needle moving erratic and normally would only fluctuate from a clutch in and clutch out reading. Yes you can change the clutch without removing the compressor.

So, did you inspect the clutch hub and, if so, what were the results?

You will need special tools that you can get from AutoZone's or your other local auto parts store rental tool program (yes, free of charge).
