You can turn the HEAT control on at any time. Of course, there won't be anything but cold air coming out the vents untill the circulating coolant starts to warm from the engine's operation.

The best time to turn it on is when YOU are cold and the engine isn't. Ummmmm......Toasty!

This reminds me of back in the days when I used to drive my daughter to school on my way to work, school was about a mile and a half away.

On those cold mornings as we would pull out of the driveway, she'd say, "Turn on the heat, daddy."

I'd tell her, "Hon, it will only blow cold air on you. Believe me, this truck doesn't warm up till it goes a mile and a half."

Yea, same here. School is less than a mile away. It gets warmed up after I arrive at school and park it. I do use my engine block heater too, doesnt help that much though

Had an Autopage remote start/ alarm installed last month... I will not own another vehicle without one again... it has an internal thermometer that tells me the temp in the truck, will automatically start when it drops below a certain temp, comes on at a certain time everymorning, and a WHOLE buch of other stuff. I never realized what a convenience it is until I have one.

technically you can blow heat whenever but if you think about it, the heater core acts as a small second radiator, so you are going to be slowing down the engine warm up process by pulling warm air out of the coolant lines before the engine is completely warmed up. But i still have found best way to warm up is go drive it, when it idles, or revving it doesnt do anything more then making alot of noise at the front of the house.

I know letting it idle doesnt do junk in extreme cold. Very agreed that as soon as you get it on the road it warms up much quicker. the best way I see it now is that as soon as the needle jumps up the tinest bit is th best time to turn the heat on.

Ford used to offer a heat storage option through their parts department. It guarenteed 160 degree heat instantly for 24 hours in freezing weather. I don't recalled what they called it, but it cost close to $1000 before installation. I thought about it 'till I found the price. My truck usually has good heat in 2-3 miles after starting.

You should just go out and start your truck for about 10 minutes and put it on 4 with it turned all the way to the red. Thats what I do when it gets cold out is stat my truck. I also have leather seats so if I don't I'd have a really cold ride.
