I don't have the factory SIRIUS radio, so I didn't look into it. You might try Crutchfield's online customer service chat. Those people seem to have all the answers. I know they helped me out a lot when I was trying to choose speakers.

With 4-6 gigs of MP3s on board, I haven't felt the need to make the leap to satellite radio!

Has anyone tried installing the 301 or 501 in a old body style (i.e. 1998)? I really want to get the 501, but I'd like to hear how much modification I'd have to do. I see that fordification mentioned getting one.

Go to crutchfields website and see if it will fit your truck, if not you can see what can fit your truck. Good luck.

I already knew that Crutchfield said it would not fit, but that didn't stop me. It arrived yesterday and I spent 6 hours installing it. Not a job for the faint of heart. Took a lot of modifications and cutting. Doesn't look as nice as it does in the new body style, but it's nice. I'll try to post pictures tomorrow.

Here are the pics. As you can see, there is a decent gap on either side.

The thread is great. I was looking for an affortable double din. How easy is the install on an 05 F150? I've never installed a radio or taken a dash apart before so knowing that how likely am I to get through it?

Thanks

Tom

It was really pretty easy to install. Of course, it didn't hurt that I had the installation kit from Crutchfield that includes photos that are specific to my truck. The whole install took about an hour and a half, including some fumbling around with how the dash adapter fit the head unit. I wired the adapter to the head unit with butt splices, and then it plugs right in! To get to the factory unit you have to pry the plastic panel that surrounds it away (it's held in by clips). You'll want to make sure you do this in such a way that you don't damage it at the pry points. The first time I installed an aftermarket head unit I was nervous as hell, but it's really not much more difficult than splicing wires of the same color together. You'd be surprised. The worst that can happen is you get confused and end up taking it in for someone else to install. At least you tried it the cheap way first!

The pictures I posted earlier in this thread are taken in an '05 SLT.

Be ready to spend some time adjusting levels and settings on the unit to get the sound you want.

If i purchase this hear unit off of ebay what will I need to buy to put it in my
'04 f-150? I'm guessing a wiring harness like this one http://www.crutchfield.com/S-PWvGcW0...00&I=120705520 but what about a mounting kit? Can anyone give me a link to a mounting kit for the 501? And is that all I would need. I would get it from crutchfield but you can get them off of ebay for like 250 shipped.

Yep - That should be it. That mount kit will include everything you need to secure it. Don't worry if you have a ton of parts left over from it. It's a universal kit that includes a single DIN frame with a lower pocket, along with a double DIN frame and side brackets. Using the double DIN frame with the ISO side mounts, the installation is a piece of cake. Nice and solid too. The radio will include a flat plate that snaps on the face. If I remember correctly, I trimmed it down to fit inside the double DIN frame, just to cover a tiny bit of gap around the edges. Once you lay the mount kit frame on the face of the radio, you'll see what I mean.

Electrical wise, that plug will cover everything you need also. Basically, all of the required connections (power, ground, speakers, illumination, etc) will happen between the radio plug and that adaptor. I always recommend solder and heat shrink tubing for the connections, but if you're not handy with a soldering iron, the crimp style will work just fine. Nothing needs to be tapped in the truck. Once you're done wiring the radio harness to the adaptor, simply unplug your existing head unit, and plug the adaptor to the factory plug.
