i wanna drop some weight

give me some ideas. I am already going to order billet forged rims which will dump 80+ pounds.

I want to drop permanent weight, not just take off the tailgate and spare.

Any ideas on a lightweight spare?

How about some other ideas that are not terribly expensive that will net 10 or more pounds of lost weight?

Thanks in advance!

Ken

Ken, You could remove the rear bumper and replace with Street Scenes urethane roll pan.

Replace the spare tire with a can of fix-a-flat. I carry it in the saddle bags on my E-Glide and it works well in case of emergencies.

I was getting worse track times with the spare, bed mat and tailgate removed, because I couldn't get traction. I would try to lose the weight towards the front first. Especially if it's just for track times. I would only get lighter on the rear end if I had a good tire/traction settup.
You could get rid of the sway bar, nerf bar,get a lighter hood, might lose a few pounds with long tube headers and exhaust. Or get radical and find the lightest Bed cover you can and relocate the battery, fuel cell to the bed. transfering weight to the rear will give you good results too.

Replace your two-piece drive shaft with a custom fabricated carbon fiber one-piece drive shaft.

Ken,
Since we have to assume as your power levels go up, traction will become an issue. Unless you plan to add some type of traction control bar, the weight should not come off the rear. With that said, let's look at what you have up front.

Front Bumper- My guess is there are some brackets/braces that could be removed to shave quite a few pounds.

Sway Bar- It weighs a few pounds, and without it, better weight transfer could occur. (Just a guess)

Water Pump- I know the Cobra pump reduces drag. Isn't it lighter too?

Hood- Are any of the aftermarket hoods lighter than the stock one.

Nerf Bars- They are pretty light, but we are searching for ounces here.

Drive Shaft- Already mentioned, but a one piece carbon, or aluminum tube would be much lighter.

Brakes- Aftermarket billet calipers, and hubs will be much lighter.

Yeah, I know most of these are not cheap mods. But as the old saying goes "Speed costs, how fast can you afford to go!"

what about a dry cell battery? 14 lbs vs 40. And it reduces the weight up front.

yup, most of the things have already been mentioned. i was gonna say relocate the battery (there was a post on it a few days ago in the L forum), nurfbars (although now you are really sacraficing looks for performance...might as well take off those heavy metal HD emblems too and replace them with lighter plastic plain f150 ones ) And then the carbon fiber driveshaft.

as for the hood, there aren't any aftermarket hoods out there lighter than the stock one. The stock is aluminum and only weighs 22lbs, or maybe a little less. i know its right around there.

Hey Josh,

I thought the CFS was a secret

Anyways...you guys pretty much got it right...its hard to lose weight without sacrificing looks. The big things are wheels and tailgate...also --- you can remove the rear bumper (that thing much weigh a ton)

i never said who has the cf driveshaft though, or if anybody did
there was talk on it a long whiles back also.

but yeah, one of the few weightsaving mods that would add bling, would be a rollpan, but again, you're taking the weight from the already light back end.

Maybe take off that big heavy thing on top of the engine that makes that big whining sound

few things: cobra water pump was shown to drop horsepower. i don't remember which thread, but it was probabley a week ago and i asked how good it was. it is normally dyno'ed with efan too, but someone did a test and the pump dropped about 4-8 horsepower. i'm quite too lazy to look. and loosing weight: remove the windshield washer fluid resevoir and relocate the battery to the back. full of fluid the resevoir is about 15 pounds. when i got a new hood i asked for no squirter holes and removed it. it's really easy, two bolts and one overflow hose. i haven't relocated my battery but i want to look at is soon to see if i can. and the hood is NOT 22 pounds, that is the aluminum hood that goes on the lightnings, others get the steel hood thats atleast twice as much. trust me, i have moved my hood, no way it is 20 pounds. you can get an e-fan, it drops weight from the clutch driven fan. while not cheap, headers will drop weight from the heavy exhaust manifolds. don't look for too much gain in horses, just get them coated so heat is lessened. drops weight + jet coating = longer engine life + well, less weight! but the main problem is rear wheel traction. since the back weights much less than the front and is up higher, theres less holding down the rear wheels and all that torque will tear it up. you can spend from nothing to about a grand all the way from cutting your coils and bumpstops to a roush suspension kit. odds are you will spend a few hundred dollars. what other weight to trim? you can trim about 200 pounds (from the back though) by cutting supports under your bed, but it can't haul anything anymore. out of ideas, my mind is cloggy from some kendall j. other idea's i would quite welcome. by the way: i removed the winshield washer fluid resevoir almost a year ago, and i have only thought about using it once when it froze to get the ice to get off my windshield.
