PLEASE HELP! '02 Trouble starting?!
There is obviously a problem that should not have to be addressed by buying a certain type of gas. The logic that if all the trucks do it on the lot it must be normal. So, if all the trucks had flat tires, that must be normal. Better yet, if all stupid car dealers had a bullit in the head, that must be normal too. We wish.
tonysailor,
With me it doesn't make a difference is truck cold or not. When it started happening that was one of first things I checked.
Allegedly they did check fuel pump and no luck there.
Thanks for input!

Hate to make this comparison, but here goes. Buddies '98 Ram did the same thing. He would crank and crack and nothing, then he would try again and itwould start right up. We determined it was a result of the fuel system not providing ample pressure on start-up. It was resolved (if you want to call it that) by turning the key to the ignition position (not the starting) and pausing for a few moments (allowing for the fuel pump to build pressure, whih is audible). The truck would then start right up. He found this acceptable, I on the other hand would not. Demand a fix.

Best Source,
I am happy that worked for you. That is exactly how I start every car that I own every single time, and it didn't make a difference on my HD.
Thanks for trying to help!

BlownHarleyFord,
I use your buddy's approach (I just mentioned to Best Source that is how I start every car that I own every single time) and it does not work. That is why I am concerned.
Thanks!

Irutt,
I agree that I should be able to use any brand of gas as long as it is 91 octane. However, we all know that brands vary in quality and you can find in owner's guide for this truck that if you are experiencing issues starting to try different brand. If that would be all it takes I wouldn't have much of a problem. However, I tried it and issue is not going away, it just changes in frequency. Even more, Chevron is what Ford uses exclusively, yet I do have problem with Chevron. That is enough for me to worry and to say that something is wrong. Vehicle should not have problems with same brand of gas factory is using.
Thanks!

I've used Costco 91 octane gas since the day I bought it and have had no starting problems. I rarely let my tank get below half a tank. Occasionally 1/4 tank but I usually try to fill up before then. It may have something to do with waiting til the light comes on in ChesterC's case.
It is a little curious that you are having difficulty with Chevron gas. As ZoranC said, it is the fuel that Ford uses for their testing.

Worse when fuel tank is low on gas?
I am having the exact same problem you have described. I have found that the problem is worse when the gas level in the tank gets low. When I fill up, it seems to start much better, then as the tank gets run down, it begins to act up more.
Is anyone experiencing the same problem?

I started having the occasional hard start problem when I started running sufficient Torco additive to give me 95 octane.
I chalk it up to the slower burn rate of the higher octane fuel. I have decided to live with it because my truck runs so much better and gives me 2+ more mpg which essentially offsets the additive cost.
BTW, it runs better because I am using a different tune that gives me 50+ more rwhp. (8 degrees more timing will do that).

Mad,
Tuning to 8* will add that much more hp?
I have had issues with starting - but very minor. I figured I was being impatient - sounded like it fired and didn't. I had similar issues with my '93 explorer - needed to pressurize the lines first - as mentioned throughout the post here.
It's been 2 years since Z posted - would love to find out how this got resolved.
