PLEASE HELP! '02 Trouble starting?!
Sorry about that.
It's a long shot but if it seems to be an electical problem, I remember another member had a wire loose from the factory that caused a problem. It was behind the the plastic cover on the firewall, just to the right of the battery.

flyarmy,
Thanks for the link. Somehow I missed your post (I guess because very tired these days, working too many hours). I will keep that electrical problem in mind.

ZoranC,
No 93 octane in California due to the formulated gas our wonderful state requires. 91 is the be you can get unless you drive across the border.
Chevron premium with Techron is highly recommended by insiders at Ford.

BillP,
Thanks for the info, that is what I thought.
Chevron 91 (Premium) with Techron is what I do use. It still confuses me why 76 would make some difference. In any case, I had trouble starting three more times since I picked it up (if I counted them right) and I will be taking it to different service next week (this time biggest in area whose dealership sells lots of Lightnings).
Do insiders at Ford recommend any octane boosters that would NOT void the warranty or they are advising against octane boosters? I have not used them any such product on any of my vehicles (especially NOT on Harley, I am very carefull what I do with it), but I would like to know just for my education.
Thanks again!

flyarmy,
Thanks for the tip. Looks like there is contradiction about Chevron. I wonder why. I will give a try to Mobil and Shell. Unfortunately, I can not get higher than 91 (California regulations).

Hi Zoranc,
Just wondering on how the truck is doing? Do you still have that intermittent problem?
I too had this happen to me twice and the truck as 2,900 miles on it. The last one just happened last night, so I thought I would ask you if you had it resolved.
Both scenarios were very similar. Started the truck, drive to the grocery store for about 1.5 miles, and when I tried to start it about 20-30 minutes afterwards it has a hard time starting.
It would turn for about 2-3 times then ignite, very similar to your suspect of fuel startvation.
I do really hate leaving it with my dealer because I really have to work it around my work schedule.

Started mine up for about a minute to move it in the garage. Next morning it started rough. My old 98 F150 4.6 would do the same thing, if you don't let the engines get fully warmed up and shut them down, they will start rough either minutes later or the next day, i've had this happen a few times.
Theft protection chip?
I had a '99 Lightning until I traded it in for my '02 HD. The L AND the HD seem to have this problem. I too noticed that it happens a lot when you start it, shut it down quickly, and then start it again hours later.
Can't help but think that this may be related to the theft protection chip in the ignition key being out of sync with the trucks computer.

Hey ZoranC,
Just checking in...I last reported changing to Union 76 (91). Well, after a week of changing I did have two start-up failures. I spoke to a friend who modifies stock cars for racing. Of course I could not reproduce the problem in his presence but he did give me a good tip that has worked ever since I tried it (about 80 cranks ago and counting without failure). He suggested when you turn the key to first position, pause and wait for the odometer to light-up and to begin to fade away (only takes about 2 seconds), then turn the key to crank it. By doing this you energize the starter components and ensures the fuel pressure rail is brought to the proper starting level. He also mentioned other things to be checked but I don't have the right equipment to perform the operation. Hopefully, this will help ease your frustration in the meantime until a more suitable solution can be found.
