Question Painting Brake Calipers - Questions

Hey guys, I have a car show on saturday, so I'm going to be painting my brake calipers on wednesday. I already have the paint i just have a few how-to questions. The paint i got was high temp engine paint so it should hold up to the heat. I did'nt wanna take the calipers off though, and i don't want any overspray so i was wondering if i could spray it in a containor and brush it on. I don' t really care if it holds up forever, but i don't want it to come off in a week or so. Any tips or anything for painting them??? Also, can i paint the outter edge of the disc, where it gets all rusty? and should i clean the calipers with alchol before i paint them? Thanks for the help and any tips/suggestions

On my old car i painted the calipers with high temp paint and it rusted through or came off in a couple of weeks. Clean them good before painting. I recommend priming them 1st too. I brushed on spray paint. Just spray it into the can lid and brush it on.

I used engine paint as well on my Mustang and it worked great. Never ever had a problem with it coming off, I guess it depends on the brand (don't remember what it was), picked it up at Pep Boys.

If you have an air compressor at home I would blow the calipers clean, if not, do it at a gas station, make sure they are clean of break fluid and everything.

I would then use an old shoe box or something to spray the paint on, I did all four and did not go through the can of paint. BRUSH ON THE PAINT, do not spray it on, to dangerous.

Good luck and post pics! What color are you doing? Harley orange? Is it a HD show or reg car show?

Have fun!

aight, from what i've gathered so far, i'm going to clean the calipers with simple green or something like that, then i'm gonna spray it in a container and brush it on. Too scared of overspray on my HD. I'll take pics but probably won't be able to post them until next sunday. My schedule is packed from now until the day after the show. I may even use rustoleum (mrbbqman(sp?) said thats what he used and it turned out great) if the spray paint happens to be too thin. I'll have to see.

Anyway, i was gonna do HD orange, but i'm not sure if it will stick out too much (too rice) so instead i got silver, If i don't like it I can always do it again. The show i'm going to is a regular car show but its gonna be pretty big. They are expecting 544 cars/trucks/bikes to attend. I'm entered in stock class 1990 -2002. i could have entered it in custom truck class 1980-2002 but i figure in stock class i will have the best chances of winning a trophy. When i get my new hood, 2"rear drop, and my secret tonneau project done, i'll enter it in custom class, but not yet. One in 3 will get a trophy so hopefully i can add to my collection. Wish me luck! Pics from the show will follow on sunday.

CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN

The paint must have a clean surface to bond too, alcohol will work good after Simple Green.

Priming is a good idea, but how will it hold up to the heat?

Brushing will work, but I prefer masking everything off with 3M tape (can be bought at any auto parts store) and plastic, paper, old sheets - whatever works. This is the time comsuming part of the job but I think its worth it. I have an S-10 project and I'm working on the front fenderwells now. Everything is masked/covered and I'm sandblasting, cleaning and painting. Fun fun.

John

worked great! and the brake caliper metal isn't smoothe anyway, so you won't notice brush marks, no fear of overspray, and alot easier to do. i redid mine with gloss silver rustoleum and its been on for about the last 5K miles and its perfectly fine. i just cleaned them real quick with alchol and started painting. I'm gonna add some red accents to them (like the brackets or something) this spring, but the paint held up great. and was easy to do.

i also sanded and painted the inside of my exhaust tips, cuz the inside is unprotected metal and will eventually rust, and it had a few spots in the back, so i painted the inside with gloss silver rustoleum, and it looks exactly like the day i bought it, and any little soot i get wipes right out, not that i get that much in them

good luck,,,post pics

man this thread is old

Thanks for the info. I think when I do mine I will do the rotor "hub" area that is already rust color and the edges of the rotor that are rust as well in silver as well. It has to look better than rust.

PhillupSVT Great site of pictures you have there.

,, i already did that too. LoL. i may do around the rotor though in black and just leave the hub part silver. And any paint that got on the edges of the disc from doing the edge of the rotor came right off with a quick trip around the block

good luck and post pics!

I masked the area off with paper and tape, hit ithem with OSPHO, then sprayed them with high temp. Stuff still looks good and no signs of flaking. Got a little overspray on the working surface of the disc but that came off first time I hit the brakes.

Did you guys take the caliper off the rotor, take the pads off and paint the underside and back, ect or can you get it good enough with everything left in tack. Thanks
