Foreign Appreciation

If one has ever been involved with the auto industry and worked in Detroit (or anywhere in the "rust belt", including Windsor), then one truly knows the long-felt, economically-ramified, "appreciation" of imports!

Damn free enterprise! (sorry, j/k)
But this reminded me of a run-in with an import around here too. I saw a green Hyundai Accent. And oh yes, it was modded. It had these chrome rims (plastic covers), a BIG metal rear wing (Erector set style with holes in the frame for less weight) and tint all the way around (purple and bubbley). One of my friends has one, and it is quite a beast. It has a massive 1.6 liter 4 cylinder. Came from the factory in race set-up, as all interior fabrics and seats weighed no more than 5 pounds due to lack of use of heavy cottons. His Accent was so sweeti, top out at almost 90 miles an hour, and it had the stunning structural ridgity of a coke can (I think the body was made of part recycled cans too!). Anyways, I pulled up to this Accent, not sure what engine mods it had though. We both jumped on it. The immense torque created by 1.6 liters just set the front wheels spinning. I guess since he had the extra large rear wing the rear wheels planted though I eased into it, as my slightly modded 5.4l needed traction too, and I got a head start since he was spinnin. Well, his automatic tranny dropped to second and the tires finally caught. That 105 horsepower (hmm, prolly bout 70 at the wheels?) just blew his car foward, but luckily I was already ahead. He pulled strong but we came up to traffic.
Moral: Watch out for those accents! You can't tell which are running low 20's and which are heavily modded and run in the 19's!

Thanks for the apology... I apprecaite your candor. For the record, I kind of like the little "pocket rocket" idea of the imports (and the SVT focus). If you don't have a lot of money and want some performance, the little civic SI is pretty stout at 160hp. I would love to have a civic 4 door sedan SI with leather and a 5 speed stick mated to the 160HP SI package with a dealer installed jackson racing supercharger. That little thing would FLY, get GREAT MPG and generally be a fun as hell ride. I would not, however, put antying on it like rims, wing, stickers, yellow stuff, fart can, etc. It would look and sound stock.

The aformentioned car would be just another toy in my garage. If I didn't have a family, I mage good money and would have a fully modded HD, the above civic, and a gutted full race mustang to tear up the track with. Maybe a classic truck or something to go with it -- a 50 ford f100 or something -- again, modded to the moon.

Flame suit is on now... call me a ricer if you must.

Ken

no problem man....you see the car you want is a clean...sleeper-ish car.......but you would be alot better off with a turbo...there quieter...make more power...and easier to play with...

look at my car...nothing yellow....no big wing.....no stickers.....it does have a big exahust but i need it......
my dream garage would be ....
my lexus
HD fully modded running 10s
60s caddy convertible bone stock
bently turbo
ferrari enzo
and a few other lil toys....

aww...dream dream....

I like your choices, but would substitue a lambo for the ferrari...

You are right on the turbo, for sure...

I would LOVE to get one of the last year produced RX-7 with the race pkg and tweak the living daylights out of it... My all time favorite "rice".

The new Renesis engine is quite interesting. The have reworked porting to increase power, decrease oil consumption and meet stricter air standards. The RX-8 (evolv) was supposed to be 280, but it looks like they are scaling it back for production. That's no turbo...

A big single or a couple of turbos on that would make it a monster, but that platform is as of yet unproven...

if i had the cash and the time it would be a street legal HD running 10s......single turbo....fullly built motor....nitrous.....4link rear end and tubbed out .....yesss..ok stop thinking Jeff....lol

as for the RX7 and RX8 the cars are beautiful....love em..but the modo is....keep a spare motor in the garage...because you will blow it up...the wankel is a cool design and can definitly make big hp.....but its not reliable....
i like the ferrari because the company is a true racing company......lambo is nice but i prefer the ferrari
Jeff
