Ricers, love'em or hate'em?
What's your take on these kids with loud exhaust system? I personaly dont care but some people hate them because of all the fancy body modifications but no real horsepower under the hood.
Waste of money
I saw (heard first, then looked out my front window) a nasty Dodge Neon today. It had a coffee can exhaust, monster size chrome wheels and a metal spoiler as high as the roof. He was driving real slow and looking around so I went for my camera, but he didn't come back.
When he finally did decide to leave the neighborhood, he wound up 1st gear for about 10 seconds. It sounded so awful. I was thinking: isn't he embarrassed

Rice sucks!!!! If you have ever seen any of my posts on that subject you would know how I feel. I think we need to get these kids in tune with some real muscle!!www.ricecop.com check out this site its pretty good.
I was driving on the passing lane, going slightly faster than traffic about a week ago when I heard this horrible buzzing sound coming up. A quick glance confirmed it: a riced out Civic to my left on the HOV lane. I expected to get a ricer "blow by" and I did... The buzzing got louder and the Civic started to inch up.... I looked at my speedo and it said 85. I looked left and the Civic was still there, maybe a car length back, horrible buzzing sound louder than ever. I maintained the speed and it went on for about two minutes. After about two minutes, he was about even up but my exit was coming up so I slowed down and changed lane. It was probably the slowest ricer "blow by" I have ever experienced. Oh, my truck is '02 supercab King Ranch with 5.4

That is a loaded question on this site. I'm going to take a wild guess and say everyone here hates them.
Personally I think they are modifying/fixing up their cars just like we are doing with trucks. I have to admit that some of their mods do look ridiculous (i.e. huge wings). But, everyone has an opinion and that opinion doesn’t necessary make it right or wrong, it’s just your opinion. If you think about it, they are just trying to make their ride stand out – just like us.
I will say this, a few months back I was on vacation in Calif. My dad was trying to find an old school he taught at. Well, we got lost with his memory. Stopped at a gas station and asked the guy inside if he knew where the school was (two blocks away). He didn't, but the ricer that overheard our conversation was nice enough to tell us just how to get there.

Personally, I think ricers are the result of bad parenting.
Also, putting underbody lights, a wing, a fart can on your exhaust, fake badges, etc etc, on your car is not 'working on your car'. There is a big difference between working on muscle car and working on a riced out civic. Someone working on a muscle car is adding a new nitrous cam, headers, anything to add performance. Someone working on a ricecar is adding clear tail lights, fake badges, anything to attract trashy 16 year old females.
I hate rice!
Don't get me wrong, there are very well built imports out there that deserve praise, such as supras and 300zx's, but pretty much anything made by honda is a joke and should be used strictly as a grocery getter, not a race car.

Well, I guess I would have to say that I'm not fond of "rice". That is if a ricer is someone who doesn't have a clue, and ends up show but no go. It does seem like a waste.
On the other hand though.... There are people who do have a clue and are building imports that could dog our trucks. The aftermarket has a whole bunch of functional mods that can result in admirable gains from thoes small dissplacement engines. Though you cannot get the longevity from the small motors, you can get them to go real fast. They have quite a weight atvantage over us.
Keep an eye out. The import auto makers are on the band wagon. There are a few real killers out there. The WRX is one of them. From what I have read there will be several more in the near future. Don't forget, the S2000 is getting 240hp out of a 2.0. Yes, you do have to get the revs up there but once your there.....
Our beloved 4.6 has only 231hp, and weighs a few more pounds.
No, I don't like "rice" but I won't underestimate the potential of todays imports either.

Excellent sticker...gott love it.
As far as the rice, rice sucks...especially up her in maine where I see several wanna bee ricers. Examples would be beaters like buick centuries and Pontiac 6000's that look terrible (faded paint, wheel covers, rusting out) trying to do the rice thing...it is one thing when ignorant people put thousands of dollars into a four cylinder rice rocket
but it is hideous when a 16 year old boys take some white house paint and masking tape, and stripes up a 1988 Buick Century...add on some white "fly" double bladed wipers and a $50 plastic ram air hood scoop and they think they are pimp'n...I don't understand, it is now my biggest pet peeve and it pisses me off. Now, I just point and laugh out loud.

well, I think my sig says it all. I say one at the parts store one day, and I had to tell him "score one for good taste" (someone ripped his fugly alum wing off. There was only the mounts and one mangled pedastle.) Needless to say, I made a friend
mhussey, thanks for the compliment.
I will clarify my thought on what rice is (everyone has their own definition)
Pretty much what wittom stated above, I have to agree with.
Any mod that gives the "appearance" of a performance boost, but in reality is nothing more than fakery.
Example:
* NOS decal on a vehicles that doesn't have it
* Supercharger decal ""
* Turbo decal ""
* Fake hood scoops that are applied with 3M adhesive
* Big *** wings that could be used to fly a 747
* Big *** fart pipe that does nothing to boost performance, but only irritates the people that hear it.
* Placing "SS" on your non-SS Chevy Nova or Chevelle
* Ok, I wasn;t gonna say it, but I can't help myself...
* Placing Lightning "badges" on your non Lightning F150
(yes, this is only my opinion, so don't anyone freak out)
I think the above illustrate "Black and White" examples of "Rice"
There are however, many "grey" areas of rice, which include (but not limited to):
* Neon licence plate frames (front or back or both)
* Under Body neon lighting for that disco effect
* Neon nozzle lights, and other assorted Christmas decorations that have no business being on a car.
I say these are 'grey' areas for the following reason:
They are after all "appearance mods", and one could argue that there's no difference between my billet grill, and some ricers nozzle lights.
I will agree with this, everyone has different taste of what they think looks cool.
Now in closing, not all rice is rice!
For example, I saw a wicked looking Nissan 300ZX twin turbo while on vacation a few weeks ago, and this car was done up to the nuts.
Beautiful yellow paint, very sharp looking body kit, and a tastefully applied wing.
This was a serious performance machine that was deserving of respect.
There was no fakery about it, nothing tacky or cheesy, it was the real deal.
In this case, you have to give respect where it is due.
This is my personal definition of rice.
