Grammar and Spelling
Hey Pickup,
Another popular term in the south is "Sunny Beach" 'cause we have so many of them down here.
Everyone else,
As far as commenting on spelling and grammar, what I do is write most all my long posts in Microsoft Word and then copy and paste them after I've spelled and grammar checked them for errors.
I don't always check, but when I have several paragraphs it starts to become a necessity for me personally. Either way, I always seem to learn something and start to write better each time if I use the checkers vs. just posting without checking for correctness.
I would like to think I don't judge by one's writing on this board but I must say that sometimes it sure does seem to affect my first impression.
Checking for errors takes twice as long but in the long run my time spent on this board becomes more productive as well as entertaining. To me, that’s why I spend my time doing this when I could be reading the paper or doing some research on something I’m interested in learning.
BTW, I checked this one so if you find something wrong then don’t say or the rules will be broken. LOL.

jryager, I understand that part, what I was saying is when someone says
"Son of a b**ches"
This is never correct. That implies that there is one son of many b**ches. I personally am just going to stick with sum-b**ch or sum-b**ches. That just leaves it correct (in the south anyway).

Well BeastRider,
It's called the internet. People do not spend the time on correct grammar or spelling. Do I expect them to? No. Will I? No. As I look to the left of this text box, I see a number of smiley faces. These are used in place of properly expressed words and ideas. Obviously, the availability of these faces indicates the webmaster condones our lack of grammar. The use of these by board members indicates their condoning of the lack of grammar.
I have read through all of the replies on this thread. Every one of you whom agrees with BreastRider and proceed to slam those of us with lack of grammar is a hypocrite. Poor use of punctuation. Run-on sentences. Poor use of tenses.
Proof read your own ***** first before you criticize mine.
This is F150online! We talk about trucks and our love of them. If the way we type bothers you, please frequent the message board at
www.analenglishPHDlosers.com!

I can't wait to hear your next rant.
I also can't believe I read this entire

been clipping my toenails.

This thread has been a very fun read. In my opinion spelling and gramer aren't that inportant on this board. I know I made many mistakes in spelling and grammer in my post as long as I can get my point across and other understand it and I can understand what others are saying in there post every thing is cool.
Hey...our Webmaster has given us all the power of redemption. When someone catches your error, just edit that post! Then those that check out your post later will think you did it right the first time!
The only time these issues perturb me is when some loser comes on here to **** us all off. Anyone remember DantheMan? That guy could type one word and it was clear what a moron he was. The regulars don't bother me, I rarely notice it.
I have a friend that remodels houses for a living (drives a F-250 SuperDuty V-10 Lariat). He can figure out complicated angles and geometry, propose material use for huge jobs with very little leftovers, eyeball dimensions, and get it all right the first time. However, he can't spell worth a damn and has to dedicate hours a week to writing estimates and contracts. He calls me to look them over and I have to correct them. He doesn't own a fax or a computer because he is ashamed of his spelling and grammar. He would love to talk to us here about trucks or on the VRCC about bikes (he rides a Valkyrie). He comes to my house and reads what he wants but he won't reply. You would never know any of this by talking to him. I have known him for 20 years and he spells no better now than he did in the 5th grade. I used to make fun of him but not anymore. Some people are just not meant to spell or write anything.

To Everyone,
This is my Sunday morning rant (kind one though).
Spelling and Grammar may not be all that important on this board, but it surely is out in the real world of work and making a living, and that’s just reality.
If we all take the time to get better each and every time we write and talk then we must get better, not worse. If we all just take the stance that it just doesn’t matter on this board then I agree but only if you don’t need help with your spelling and grammar, which means we are all excluded, so we should try.
In my opinion (IMO), the best way to get better is to just start doing it and what better place than this forum is there to get better? I think that maybe some folks have totally missed the boat and seem to throw away the opportunity to practice better writing, spelling and grammar right here on this board. The best part of this board as a practice scratch pad is that no one really has to know our real identity, unless we care to reveal it.
To me, the only difference between someone who has mastered spelling and grammar and one who hasn’t is the one who has took the opportunity vs. one who hasn’t wasted it.
The bottom line is this; if you want to get better at anything then it’s going to cost you, education is not cheap. To get better at anything, it’s going to cost money, time and lots of determination. Just ask any golfer, baseball player, surfer, etc and the ones that master it put in tons of time, money and effort. So, with all that said, reading, writing, spelling and grammar are no less demanding than sports and maybe even more so.
Hey seacrow,
I'm sorry to hear about your technically smart friend but I must say that if he can figure out all that you say he can then he surely can master reading and writing too.
I think the day to start getting better at anything we don't do that entirely well is today. How do I know you might ask, 'cause I've been from both sides of the track myself and pulled myself out from a pretty deep hole and am doing fine now? By the way (BTW), I accomplished getting out of that hole myself, with my own money and pure self determination but not without the help and friendship of my first wife.
If your friend puts in as much time into reading and writing as he apparently did to master carpentry and construction then he will get much better but it sounds like he probably just doesn't have an interest or he needs a special teacher to assist him. Also, if he refrains from replying to this board and to others then it really does bother him and he must not like that feeling as it probably feels like a handicap.
I would have to guess that he's crying out for help and thankfully you are there for him. I just wonder if maybe you are just too close to him to be his teacher, especially since you said you used to laugh at him. This man needs help and he can get it just around every corner he turns, he just has to ask.
Its amazing how one story can blend right into another but, IMO, spelling and grammar are very important. My job requires that I spell and try my best to be grammatically correct and each and every time I write a letter, memo or email someone at work or a customer/dealer.
So, IMO, by your friend not replying to this board, it's only making his situation worse and not better. If your friend comes over to read this board, then maybe you should let him participate in the replies or maybe you can let him tell you what he wants to say and then let you type it, that will be a fastest way for him to feel as if he is actually doing it himself. Self confidence is a derived and learned trait and is usually the result of a good outcome.
Good luck to you and your friend and if it were me in your shoes I would feel obligated to help, but that's just me talking.

Hey H13,
It must be painful being a pilot if you think using IFR, VFR @ DFW or JFK causes you grief, especially if you are trying to find out the SIG METS status. Also, is your call name some code too?
I was under the impression that all pilots use tons of acronyms to communicate and I don't think it's 'cause you are lazy but because it's just more efficient.
IMO, there is use and abuse of acronyms and one or two here and there is just use and not abuse. I think your portrayal is abuse so won't you show us some examples of use that is inappropriate in your opinion.
Also, since you are a pilot, you should know that plain is just ordinary and plane is what you fly.
And in addition, just what is GMP and LMAO 'cause you didn't explain those before you used them.
BTW, I like your TRK

Seacrow, you're a good man for helping your friend. Has he ever been tested for dyslexia?
To all of those who think you need to be literate and know how to spell and use perfect grammar to succeed in this country has tunnel vision. There are many hundreds of thousands of people in this country who are very successful, many of them millionaires, who can't spell or put together a grammatically correct sentence. These are the people who either can't speak/read English or where English is there second or third language. Clearly, you don't need a mastery of the English language to succeed in the USA.
Sure, there are jobs where mastery of the English language is essential, but there are many more jobs where it isn't important. Sometimes, I wonder if my plumber can read or write English. He can, of course, but sometimes I have to wonder. He's one of those guys who had to quit school and go to work at a young age. Anyway, he's one of the busiest plumbers around and he lives in an exclusive neighborhood in a house that's worth around $2 million.
Then we come to the fact that there are people out there who have a disability and may or may not know it. Who are we to chastise anyone for something they have little or no control over?
What about the people who didn't have the benefit of a good education? There are many people who, because of circumstances, had to leave school early and start earning a living at a young age. Again, who are we to criticize them for their circumstances?
How do you know when a spelling error isn't a typographical error? Half my spelling errors are due to typgraphical errors. I know how to spell, but when I type them, sometimes my fingers don't go where they should or one hand is too fast and I transpose letters. Who are you to decide if an error is a typo or due to poor spelling skills?
Message boards like this is international in nature. Somebody posting here may not speak English as a native language. Who are we to criticize somebody because English is not their primary language?
One of the biggest disservices anybody can do to this board is to criticize a person for his spelling and grammar. It just makes it harder for them and others who lack your "English skills" to post here. For all we or you know, that person you just blew out of the water might be the only person on this board who has the answer to your question, but is afraid to post because of your criticisms.
Quit criticizing the spelling and grammar of others on this board!

i consider posting a message here more of a conversational typing. i seldom take the time to compose a lengthy post with proper capitalization and punctuation. i think that is how many here feel about it. most spelling errors i overlook as typo's or mistakes (we all make 'em), and abbrev. are simply a way to quicken your typing of the post.
the funny part is that many of those above who criticize the writing of others have some sort of grammatical mistake within their own post. hmmm goes back to the old, let he who is perfect cast the first stone huh?
the fact is, we're not here because we all love showing off our usage of the english language, we're here because we all love ford trucks.
