How can you tell an 01 5.4 from a 4.6?
How can you tell an 01 5.4 from a 4.6?
Do they both have triton badges? Also what is the lariat package, is it simply leather? My father who is in arizona just purchased an '01 black ext cab, not a screw, lariat with the triton v8 badges. I'm trying to find out if it's a 4.6 or 5.4. Thanks for any help guys.
Open the hood and look at the motor. If you can't tell by that, look for the engine spec sticker. It should be under the hood as well. Ford used to use different grills for each motor. The honeycomb used to be only on the 5.4. Now you can get the honeycomb with the V6 sport package. The standard V6 and 4.6 V8 grills are usually not the honeycomb style.
well I've got a 99' and its the 4.6 and it has all the badgeing on fenders and has the honeycomb grille. I think most of the 5.4's come with the 5 star rims and the 4.6's come with the slanted brushed aluminum 5 star type rim. But thats just what I think, dont take it to the bank.
So the truck is in Arizona and you'r not and your dad ain't saying?
Ask for a pic of the rearend. If the differential cover is round it's a 4.6. If it's eggshaped, laying on the side, it's 5.4.

Hey guys, try this one! Ford Motor Company employee here! If you open the hood and look down between the valve covers under the throttle body(this is the assembly that is attatched to the air cleaner air intake). If you have a gray cast looking intake you have a 4.6L V8. I you have a black plastic looking intake setup, then you have a 5.4L V8. Also there is a badge or Triton logo in every Snow Shield, the black cover over the throttle body which reads Triton 4.6L or 5.4L, just a clue that you can only use one or the other here. The mounting brackets are differ on each of the motors.

Raoul,
Good one. After what happened in the milage killer thread I didn't think you would bite on this one. By the way that was funny. You must have over a million miles on that truck by now.
I think i will go start a new thread on "I think I have the wrong engine". Maybe its like the rads. The wrong engines are being put in and don't match up with the grilles.

Yeah, he's in arizona, and i'm in texas. And i'm sure he doesn't know and i wanted to know with out asking him to do some detective work.
So I guess there is no definitive badging distinguishing the two for 98+ trucks right? The 4.6s got 'triton V8' badges as well as the 5.4s?

HI!... Yes all F-150's equipped with the v8's get the TRITON badging from "98" and up. Another way to tell if you have a 5.4 or 4.6 engine from the outside of the truck is to look at the rearend. All 5.4 equipped F-150's come with the STERLING 9.75 rearends. All 4.6 equipped F-150's come with the STERLING 8.8 rearend. The 8.8 looks the same as the rearends in the MUSTANG and the 9.75 looks a lot like a DANA 60 rearend except for the DANA 60 is a bit larger in case diameter.
I have a Lariat with a 4.6, a honeycomb grill, and no badges except the one that says F-150. And I think my rear-end is way better now than it was when I was in high school. I have lost 85 pounds!
I would suspect that 93coupe was interested in knowing how to tell a 4.6 from a 5.4 when sitting next to an F150 as the first cars on a 4 lane street.... without getting out, running to the back of the truck and looking under the rear of the truck and getting a face full of exhaust, rubber, stones, dust, etc when the light turns green..........
