Download and install CCleaner - free version is fine - and run that periodically. It will clean out all kinds of temp garbage and fix registry errors.

One more time - do you know the exact CPU model?

I use MSE as background protection and Malwarebytes free version as a manual scanner. Between those 2 you will be adequately protected without Norton's major excess baggage.

Just a thought, TruckGuy, is the Win 7 installation you bought an "Upgrade" copy? If so, without your old boot drive in the machine, it won't have anything to upgrade.

If that's the case, I think you'd have to upgrade to Win 7 using the old HD and then "clone" it to the new drive. (Or, as was suggested earlier, clone the HD with the old OS and then upgrade on the new HD.)

I'm a believer in MSE too.

The Windows 7 upgrade will completely install on a blank drive. It just won't activate without doing a workaround.

Right, been using CCleaner for as long as I can remember. Solid! Once in awhile I'll download Malwarebytes, but it never comes up with anything after scan. That's been around for awhile as well.

All free versions.

Thanks for the responses guys. I actually regularly use all those programs, read about them on here back when I first joined actually Been running malware bytes full system scan today as a matter of fact.

I'm gonna try the clone procedure most likely when my buddy looks at it this week. For now I am happy though

Yea, he's 32 bit so he can't run 64 I bet. Vista 32 bit is a great machine IMO. But yea, your possessor would have to be 64 compatible to run it, - even a little lol.

I HATE Norton Anti-Virus! It was a decent program when Peter Norton owned the compnay but it's turned into a over bloated memory/CPU/Hard Drive hog since Symantic bought it! THE FIRST thing that I do when I work on any computer to do disable and remove NAV!

I use TrendMicro's FREE online virus checker. It's ALWAYS updated AND it doesn't sit in the back ground and eat up all the computers resources!

Online virus checkers are fine - and Trend Micro isn't the only one out there. However, they do not give you background protection, they are only "on demand" scanners.

Avast is the way to go for real time protection.

I never would have guessed Norton was holding 48 gigs hostage, that's insane

Ok so another update

I tried to run a defrag and it won't work. same with Chk Disk. Don't run, so it does appear to be a HD problem still. I also tried to install the new HD again using Cd/DVD 1st and HD second in the Bios. Still failed. I did a diagnostic on the HD and it said it was fine? Anymore thoughts?

Yeah the Norton was crazy, definitely an annoying program.

Ck disk and Dfrag won't run? Something is def screwed up. Your sure you are setting that up to run. I mean it's easy, but there are steps to be taken.

Yea, I still use chk disk from time to time, w/W7. Although the defrag programs seemed to have changed beyond my understanding, - a little anyway, I use the Pirforms Defragler currently; just not as confident with it.. Years ago I purchased Perfect Disk, PD6 I believe and I used for many years, up until Vista came out, - then the PD I had would no longer work. PD is available for Vista/W7/W8, I just haven't purchased the updated version. Anyway, that was my favorite defrag program.

Not trying to change the subject but yea, personally I believe you need both of those tools for the windows operating systems.

MAC - Nah.....
