Not sure about Northern, but I have used the cheap Harbor Freight machines, with great success... If you already know how to weld, it's only a matter of adjusting yourself to that welders capabilities...

I built steel fences and gate for work, up to 30ft long by 8ft tall, do it all with a 110v Millermatic, in 4 years, never had one come apart... We had 7 fence panels with about 30 pickets apiece on a 16 trailer, got rear ended about 40mph, only one weld popped, the rest just bent...
