Distracted Driving

Hey im doing a thing in school about distracted driving and thought of this sight to see if any of you guys had ever been in an accident involving somebody using their phones, eating, or just focusing on something other than the road,or you being that person. I deal with idiots in the school parking lot who are more worried about the gossip in school and are texting, rather than their safety or others and others property. ANY input or stories would be greatly appreciated. No im not being a lazy kid and not doing my work, I am asking others for their views because it may be used in my presentation.

My best friend rear ended me in his tacoma when he was changing the radio station on his truck. I was stopped in the road because there was a car about 4 cars ahead of me that was turning left. It had just stopped rainning and as i was sitting there waiting, he locked up his brakes and slid into the back of me going 40mph. the impact shoved me into the car ahead of me and i crunched in there trunk pretty bad. my bed was shoved into my cab, the frame was bent in 4 places by the bed and his tacoma with a metal bumper was smashed in. Both mine and his trucks were totaled in the wreck.

i can post pics if you need them.

A close friend of mine was driving down a gravel road after a day out on the lake, by this time it was dark, most likely around 11pm. His brother was in the passenger seat sleeping. Neither were buckled in. My buddy dropped a cd that he was trying to put in the radio and leaned over to pick it up. According to the cops he missed a slight curve in the road while traveling 45-55 mph, they went into the ditch and the car jumped/barrel rolled into a wheat field. My friend got thrown horizontally in front of his brother and absorbed the impact for him. He broke his jaw, cheekbones, collar bone, several ribs, left wrist, and i think his hip as well. His brother was knocked out, scraped up a bit but otherwise relatively unharmed. They were in the car until around 3 am when his brother woke up and crawled out, thinking his older brother was dead. He was able to walk to the highway and flag down a car. My friend was finally rescued from the car at around 6 am, still unconscious. He survived, had to go through tons of reconstructive surgery and rehab though.

My wife got rear-ended on the freeway by a guy who was trying to get something out of his glove box.

Traffic was stoppped on the far side of an overpass. Guy in back of her was travelling freeway speed over the overpass, not realizing traffic in all lanes was stopped on the other side as he fumbled in his glove box.

Messed up her car bad (not totalled, though) and pushed her into the car in front of her. Would have been much worse if the guy had not looked up in time and locked his brakes up, scrubbing off some speed.

She saw him coming and tensed up. She broke her wrist pretty bad and needed pins put into it. No other damage to her, but she was newly pregnant with our first child, and so the whole thing was pretty stressful.

Not only was the surgery a hassle and painful, we had problems with the tow yard or the repair shop stealing her speakers (could not prove who did it for sure but I know it was the tow yard). Also, the ambulance company charged way more than our insurance company thought was reasonable, so we had to fight with them over the balance. The whole thing sucked pretty bad.

The only bad car accident I've been in, the other driver was 'distracted' by being about 4 times over the legal limit for blood alcohol and we had a head on. Lucky to be here, but that's another story.

I lost my Silver truck to someone backing out of a driveway without checking to see if traffic was clear. I had no time to stop, barely got a slight swerve started before i slammed into her van.

i too was rear ended on a highway while being @ a complete stop. the (asian) guy behind me was also playing with the radio and hit me @ 100kmh.

now for the good part, i was watchin my rear like i always do when highways go from 100-0 and saw him coming. i mananged to just get on the gas in time and crank hard left and get into the shoulder lane. he just clipped the passenger rear of the (plastic) bumper and ripped it off.

needless to say the car that was infront of me, i believe it was a accord/camry, had its entire trunk shoved right into the back seat, and then it into a few cars infront of that.

i still feel a little guilty to this day about leaving that guy out to hang like that, but im sure he got a new car out of it.

I was rear-ended by some ricer kid in a newer Honda Civic because he was texting while driving. My hitch went through his BLOCK and the grille was about two feet from windshield. It bent my frame just a tad.

As a firefighter, I see accidents almost every day. The last one I responded to lost control of his vehicle in a turn, over corrected and slammed head-first into a 150-yr old oak tree. DOA, but his friends were still buzzing his phone as we were attempting to gain entry.

Just two days ago I was walking across the street at a crosswalk, complete with flashers, and two cars stopped for me. A third car with a girl texting, even though there's a state wide ban on texting and a county wide ban on using your phone, rear ended the first car, shoving it into the second. Thankfully the cars were there or it would have been me she hit.
