My Shell Station Has lowered the Octane of gas.

I always get gas at shell. 3 years ago they had 87,89,93 octane. About a year ago they went with 10 percent ethenol and dropped the octane to 87,89,91. Now today they have went to 11 percent ethenol and dropped the octane to 86,88,90 octane .Just wondering if any others have noticed this with shell?
Im guessing this means i will get even less mpg's.

ethanol will alway mean worse gas mileage the more of it they use the worse the gas mileage. It startedd off here in utah as winter blend and now it seems year round. I do know some refinery's put in less ethanol then others. Here in Utah we have long had octane ratings of 85 87 90

Ethanol is crap. Once the government quits subsidizing it, all the oil companies will drop it like a bad habit.

I think we will probably see a mileage decrease. But Octane is only a stabilizer that keeps the gas from pre detonating. I guess the ethanol mix makes the fuel more stable so the octane is not as important.

^ I was going to say I thought ethanol had a higher octane than regular gasoline.

I haven't notice a change in octane, but I have noticed that my local Chevron station has added the "10% Ethanol" sticker to their pumps over the past few weeks.....

I don't think it will start predetonating because the alcohol is so stable it has to be ignited by the gas fire

I'll have to check my local shell out where I get gas. I have noticed my mpgs drop over the past couple days maybe I'll calculate up the mileage. I filled it up drove 220 miles and now I have a hair under half a tank. Doesnt seem like I drove that much maybe I just drove more than I thought lol

What sucks is we have a lincoln mark viii that premium fuel is recommended. I can tell a big difference on how the car drives with different stations. We first got the car in dfw i put in 93 Octane from a texaco and she ran awesome. Got here and the highest octane in town is 92 with ethanol at fina and i could tell a little difference. So im sure running 90 on shell gas the lincoln is not going to be to happy. The chevron has 91 and doesnt have any ethenol stickers on any pumps so i think im going to start running that.

They shouldn't be lowering the octane - your town is not at a high enough altitude to qualify for "mountain gas" octanes.
