Gas Station Warning Signs Most of Us Have Disregarded.

I see a lot of people disregarding the "No Cell Phone Use while refueling your vehicle".

When you exit your vehicle with the intent to pump fuel, stay out until you finish refueling. According to actual accounts, static electricity is very dangerous around gas station pumps.

I walked up to a brain dead fellow one day and told him to please not smoke while fueling his truck cause he was putting his life and the life of others, including mine in danger. He told me to go (fill in the blank) myself. So I took his advice, got in my truck and went to a deferent gas station where the gas was more expensive.

I am guilt of fueling my empty fuel dispensers while they were on the bed of the truck; I don't do that anymore.

What are you guilty of?

I worked at a truck stop for a couple years when I was in college. I would regularly turn off pumps for various offenses if the people were snotty to me or my coworkers. We were a "pre-pay" station so people regularly got rude with us, as if it were our fault. So if they were talking on their cell phone, I would turn their pump off and get on the speaker ever so nicely "I would be happy to turn your pump back on after you finish your phone call."

The big 2 for me were smoking and turning the pump on and leaving it to come inside. I had a customer spill several gallons because the pump didn't shut off while he was inside. He tried to not pay for it, we called the cops and he ended up paying since the signs clearly state to not do that.

I find this rather funny. A cell phone uses a circuit board, it cannot spark enough to ignite gasoline, when used as intended. The only way a cigarette will light gasoline is if the gasoline splashes up on the cigarette. The same with the static discharge. It has to be close enough to the fuel source to actually ignite it. The same with leaving your car running. The exhaust does not get hot enough to ignite gasoline.

True, a lit cigarette will not cause a fire, but the flame that lights the cigarette will.

Could be wrong, but the most explosive part of fuel is the fumes....

This is the same reason a large enough static discharge can ignite the fumes ( that is why the clips show a ball of fire, that quickly goes out most of the time ).

Mythbusters tested this. The ember on a cigarette can't light the fumes, neither can a cell phone.

I saw that episode. I would consider the biggest danger at the station to be static electricity.

Normally I am a big Mythbusters fan, but I've seen several security footage videos of cell phones and cigarettes causing gas pump fires. Had to watch for safety training at the truck stop. Pretty sure you tube would have some as well.... I'm just on really slow internet at work or I'd look for you.

A cigarette will not light gasoline if its splashed on the cigarette. Matter of fact, you can drop lit cig's in a bucket of gasoline all day long and the only thing that happens is the cig's get put out just like dropping them in water. However, a cig will light the fumes and do it quite explosively. I have an uncle (was an uncle by marriage, now divorced and no relation any longer) who was filling his john deer gas tractor and looked down in the tank to see how full it was, with a lit cig in his mouth. The resulting fireball just about blew his face off. Several months in the hospital, skin grafts, burn treatment, etc. Bad news, but darwins theory at work.

"This one time at band camp", a woman at a gas station caught her arm on fire. She saw a police officer and started waving for help; the police officer shot her to death.

Cause the law states that you shouldn't wave a fire arm at a police officer.

"And it so funny."

What? There's a camp for banned members?

Regarding pump safety, it all comes down to intelligence. Some just don't get it, like that will never happen to me.

You are correct, but before the gasoline gets there the fumes will increase to the point where it is enough to ignite.

My point (although poorly stated) was walking around with a lit cigarette with gas going where it should (in the tank) will not result in an explosion. The fuel air ratio is not high enough to explode. If the ratio ever does get high enough you should be able to tell something is wrong, due to the strong oder of gas.

Additionally, I would reccomend not losing control of your vehicle and hitting a gas pump.

:o Pardon my Engwish, I don't speak American.

But yeah, I couldn't agree with you more; the way I see it, is as "they" say, (and you know how "they" know everything) better safe than sorry.
