I'm a union pipefitter and there is a huge push for welders right now. I know the thread is old, just wanted to add

Now that is both a repost, and very old news

Op - do both if you can swing it - we've got some fellers up here and they love it. Versatility = survival.

Welder or diesel mechanics, Very high demand out here. Both making well over a 100k a year, no problem.

I have done both and still do both. Diesel mechanic is my favorite. Always something different.
