Need some computer help, external hard drive issues

Hey everyone,

I've got an old Maxtor One Touch III mini that I need to access. It's password protected so I need to download the software from Seagate. However, the only software I can find is for 32 bit OS. I'm currently running windows 7, so I'm assuming I can't run that software. Is there anything I can do to access this stupid thing? Seagate wants $15 for tech support (WTF?!), so hopefully someone here has a solution.

Thanks in advance guys

Win 7 comes in 32 & 64 bit favours btw - and the 64 bit variant will run many 32-bit apps fine.

Plus - Win 7 does a very credible job supporting compatability with older apps.

Give it a shot. Can't hurt.

BTW - what app is it?

Thanks MGD, I'll download it and give it a shot

The app allows the user to input the password into the external hard drive so I can unlock it. Windows wont even acknowledge it's there until I unlock the darn thing.

I bought it maybe 5 years ago and backed up my old computer with it. I'm hoping it has a bunch of old pictures that I lost.

I just used my One touch 3 last week to disk Image 4 different systems, - including W/7. Mines old as well, Maxtor 300 G~ PartitionedX4. Thing still works great. I did use a couple different Imaging programs. I know for "7"(64), -I used Acronis.

Well the Maxtor software just keeps crashing. Despite multiple attempts to repair it and redownload it.

I guess my next option is to try and get the files off my old laptop. It's an old HP with XP, but it has a virus that wont let me log on to it. Is there anyway to get the files off my old hard drive and transfer them onto my new computer?

I hate computers.

MyComputer/R Click on External/Properties/Tools/Error Checking/ Check both repair boxes.

Apply/ok - reboot if you cant lock the drive .

The external drive isn't appearing under mycomputer. That's the issue I was initially trying to fix. Supposedly the solution was to download the Maxtor software which would allow me to access the drive.

Why not just format the drive and be done with it?

Can you describe the 'crash'? Screenshot?

If it's not under My Computer it's not getting a drive letter assigned. Right-click the Computer icon and select 'Manage'- go to Disk Management and see if a device shows up - it will tell you things like what format is being used - if the device is healthy you should be able to assign a drive letter here as well.

To get files off yer old laptop you can use a bootable Preinstall environment like WinPE - bootable USB or CD will get you to the filesystem - from there you can copy the files off then scan them on the new system.

Got any puter-literate friends - offer 'em free beer

With the Maxtor connected, head to Device manager and then uninstalled the driver ~> Device Manager/Universal Serial Bus/USB Mass Storage Device.

Then unplug the device and plug iit right back in. The driver will install on it's own...Fixed it

Maybe - but it's simpler to right-click the root and rescan

Risky too - what if he uninstalls the wrong device> lol

[BTW 'Brew - Acronis = ImageX with WinPE3.0 = ( and free) ]. Wim files are completely hardware-agnostic.

Trust me , it will work. That's a bug work around in W7x64. W7 will not update the driver, so... Device manager WILL SEE the drive. Just needs a little push in order to access a one touch with older x32 drivers. Like I said , it will work and it's easy to find in DM.

Acronis, - I hate it, but it's one of the only programs I actually purchased in the past. Still trying to shoe horn my $ worth out of the damn thing lol.

Don't worry, I use BART PE,(if that's what your referring to) UBCD W/ImageX - Now that's an awesome set of goodies.

OK - I trust you. 32bit drivers can be problematic in a 64bit O/S.

Jeepin' yer in good hands with the dude in the closet
