Choice to make
If you can't afford the truck and have the option of using the car, use the car. You're in college, you're supposed to be smart and this isn't a difficult decision.
Why do you go home almost every weekend (I'm assuming your trips home are over the weekend since you work and have classes)? If you just kept your butt at school like most students you wouldn't have to worry about spending money on gas. Don't worry about your g/f living so far away either, it won't work out and you're just wasting your time and money. Find yourself a chick at school.
edited to add:
If you can't afford gas, quit spending money on mods, and if you take the car, for the love of Pete, don't waste any more money on mods for it!
And you shouldn't have to worry about hitting curbs in a car, just don't drive like crap!

Alex, what you're dealing with is a classic 'needs vs wants' situation. You want your truck cuz it's cool, and you put alot of work into making it alot nicer than when you first got it, but all you really need right now is something with 4 wheels that goes when you press the right pedal and stops when you press the left one. Go cheap for now, once you finish school and get a job that pays you more than $6/hr then you can start blowing cash on your *new* truck at that point.
If you're worried about the beater car crapping out on you, which would be bad for you since you need a working vehicle for your job (maybe consider getting a job that doesn't require you to drive around all night, you'll save on gas that way too), then I'd suggest keeping your truck, just cut back on those trips home to save a couple bucks and tell the g/f to come visit you once in a while.
Not all girls in college have STDs, just most.

My parents paid for nothing!!!! i made it on my own but you youngins want want want but don't WANt to put in the effort to get what you want. Give me give me generation............ Sell the dam truck and sell the plane get a decent car that gets 25-30mpg and down the road after you WORK and earn more money you can then buy mods, gas, tinted winodws etc... Now wipe your face and get out of my sight.... dam these kids!!!.

raptor im on the same fence as you, being a broke college stundent that has to do a lot of driving, 9-12 mpg gets real old real fast. ive been trying to decide on whether to sell my expo and get a car for the past 3 months with no avail. if i didnt have over 4 grand in my truck maybe the decision would be a little easier.
Dude, i feel ya, ima junior and im not gonna say the thought hasn't crossed my mind adn then just get something nice and new when im out. I'd prolly do it if i were you just bc not having any money is stressful and college is enuf stress. If i wasn't 6'7", i'd prolly get a little ranger or something similiar. F150's fit me better than anyother vehicle i've ever been in. I did at one point, my freshman year, trade my 1998 f150 in for a 2004 Acura TL and you see what im driving now. Wish i had just kept my 98, financially id be in way better shape. BUT i had a pretty good size payment on the TL so it wasn't really any different. If i hadn't of had the payment i prolly woulda kept it. Even tho it was a pretty tight fit for me. Best advice i can give is just to not make any hasty decisions, try to just think everything out.. i wish i had
You should be happy i wish my parents would pay for something.

Alex listen to steve.
you really need a new job that doesnt involve you driving your truck or car all over town. go be a waiter at some resturant and youll make more and spend less on gas. also you need a legitiamate job during the summer to help out.
im a senior now and though the mods slow down during school i still have some extra here and there to get a mod once in a while but still make it through with what i need. i have been going to houston more this semester than most and that was like 50 bucks every week and half in gas and it KILLED me but i know theres no way i could sell the truck and get something else with out needing to spend more money.
Keep the truck
you need gears/tune i get 15 combined from my v6 on 35"s

Get a job at a Lowe's or Home Depot. They usually start you out around $10-11 per hour. I worked part time at Lowes for 2 years.
As a part-time employee I got:
-anywhere from 15-40 hours a week (depending on school schedule)
-$12/hour
-PAID vacation (20 hours a week)
-Sick pay
-Random little benefits
When I quit, I still had 2 weeks vacation unused. I got a check in the mail for $700+ for my unused vacation/sick/personal days.
