So save money by cutting teachers and law enforcement salaries and benefits. That's going to secure votes and relieve the economic stress on these workers.

well no offense but teachers are getting "inflation pay increase" over twice as high as what the military gets, not to mention the dollars value is dropping. Also, free medical for the whole family until they die? Federal govt workers dont even get that.

The teacher he was arguing with cracks me up, shes complaining about her salary not going up but then she comes back with "teachers do it because they love it", so why are you complaining about a salary freeze? its not like they are cutting your salary, or firing you.

Hypocracy.

People like you want to take from the rich because they have "too much". Public sector employees are compensated at rates unheard of in the private sector. You can do that as long as people don't mind paying ever higher tax rates. Guess what? We, the people, mind. Many public sector employees are getting "too much". The difference from the rich is, the public sector employee is taking that from all of the tax payers, not by providing goods or services that people can choose not to use.

This common sense govenor is employing cuts across the board, because that is the fair and equitable thing to do. Sorry that common sense offends you. It's something that most of us have had to employ in our own fiscal responsibilities.

I think that you may be confusing this common sense govenor with the pandering progressives. In NJ, he is trying to do the job that he was elected to do. Thoes pandering are playing games with peoples emotions, with the express purpose of becoming and remaining career politicians, who can eternally command the tax payers to fund their every whim.

If there are people who are offended by common sense solutions to the fiscal issues in the country, they might what to consider volunteering a larger percentage of their income to governments. They can pay for the puplic sector. They can pay 100% of their families health care. They can pay for years and years of thier pensions.

Common sense it truely uncommon these days. A damn shame if you ask me.

When there is not enough money to fund the government then it is obvious the government is too big. The easiest cuts are to stop pay raises. The toughest are laying people off and cutting programs. If one or some of the myriad of cuts are not implemented there is only one end result, a bankrupt country. That is what people seem to be forgetting, the country can only run on deficits for so long before it implodes. I feel we are dangerously close to the point on implosion.

Maybe it's time for the Gen-X'ers to stand up to mom and dad and tell them, the grandparents did us and the country a big disservice by spoiling them. The boomers have had the run of the country since the 70's and we can see where that got us, overspending and a give me more mentality. We need to get back to the lessons learned by the greatest generation and quit spending more than we take in, in both our personal lives as well as our government.

We can't afford the programs we already have in place. Damn it Congress quit passing more programs that we can't afford. Look at programs that have dubious value and end them. Don't cut them. Don't down size them. Get rid of them. They serve little value. I don't give to squirts why a pig smells. They just do. Quit funding research to find out why. Art is good, but quit finding it with my money. It isn't essential to the existence of this country, you, Congress, have no place in funding it. Protect this country from enemies both foreign and domestic and let the people have the freedom that was won by great men and women in history, such as Washington, Ross, Grant, Han****, and Jefferson.

Teachers have the same problem to me as politicians, and preachers, they don't do it anymore because they love it they do it for the money. I think that's part of the reason the school systems are so messed up and children are not receiving the proper education, when your only motivation to do something is money, your only going to do enough to get paid.

No common sense would be to raise taxes on EVERYBODY instead of cutting salaries and benefits of state and local workers. People compare raising taxes to burning the bible in this country, but demand efficiency and effectiveness of social services. You basically want schools and other departments to work better with less, that hypocrisy.

I also had a good laugh at his Reagen comment about him wanting smaller government and no deficit. Republicans are just as bad as Democrats, except they lie to your face, back stab you, and are complete hypocrites. "We want smaller government". The Patriot Act and No Child Left Behind don't think so.

Raise taxes on everyone = End of deficit = Common Sense

Thank "No Child Left Behind" for that.

If we change taxes completely change the taxing system and, cut government putting our way of life back on track would be greatly served. We know what the GDP is. We know how much money we are collecting from income taxes. Changing to a sales tax and making an income tax unconstitutional, via an amendment, would go a long way to making collecting taxes much more efficient and cut government. Suddenly everyone pays taxes, illegals, tourists, deadbeats, people working under the table, everyone. Everyone's tax bite is based on their income because the wealthy buy more things than the poor. This can even be made more fair (for the liberals) by giving a credit card type item with a tax exempt limit based on the number of people in the household. One form would need to be filled out every year and could easily be done online. Those who wish to pay more in taxes just don't fill out the form.

A good place to start cutting government would be items not specifically authorized in the Constitution. If that was not enough then move to items mentioned in the Constitution. This is very simple. One estimate is that for every government job $175k in taxable private sector income has to be generated. The government has x dollars coming in and they have x+y dollars going out. Get rid of y, plain and simple. People do it every day with their personal budgets. Those who don't go bankrupt. Those who do it very well get rich. The more government we have the higher the on going costs to keep it up. The same as your personal budget. If you rent a 1000 sq/ft house, it is a lot cheaper than owning a 3500 sq/ft house. A person living in a 3500 sq/ft house can't fathom living in a 1000 sq/ft house. Obviously it is possible otherwise people wouldn't be able to do it. It is very possible to cut our federal budget and federal spending, without effecting national security. All that is required is the critters to come to the understanding that the people who pay their salaries are tired of funding BS programs and failed ideas.

No Child Left Behind, was allowed to be written by a liberal (Sen Kennedy) as a peace offering by Bush after the 2000 elections. If you have problems with that law, blame the liberal.

Dropping the income tax would increase taxes on other things, property, sales, everything. No matter what, the government is going to get the same or more money in taxes. Getting rid of one just increases the others.

So you're saying that Republicans are too incompetent to write their own bill, so a drunken fool is a co-author to create it. Conservatives and Liberals are to blame for passing it with bipartisan support. Don't kid yourself, conservatives aren't the white knight while liberals are dastardly evil doers. They're both equally incompetent, they both lie, cheat, and deceive the public just for the sake of arguing.
