Computer help---a little problem...
Our wireless keyboard has been shutting down on us---I put new batteries in, so that is not the problem...anyway, I purchased a new Microsoft wireless mouse/keyboard, and even after I loaded the software via CD, when I plug the wireless recognizer in, nothing happens. The Wizard pops up, but keeps telling me that the set-up was unsuccessful. Interestingly, though, there are shortcuts now on my desktop for settings to the mouse and the keyboard.
I still am running Windows XP--might this have something to do with it---drivers missing for USB, or what?
Thanks
Tim C.

You were able to type this somehow.
Did you completely uninstall the old mouse and keyboard drivers?
Restart the computer after uninstalling?
Is the keyboard compatible with XP?
The software CD may also be out of date and you may have to go online to download the software from Microsoft.

XP should not require any drivers for basic keyboard and mouse functionality. Go through the wireless connect sequence in the manual. Dunno what M$ uses, but with Logitech, I think it's this - press connect button on receiver, then keyboard, then receiver again, then mouse.
If you want the enhanced functions, load the software after you have connectivity.

I have tried plugging them into every open USB port---I did the device manager route and all of the USB's are functioning. I also did the Logitec stuff and pushed all of the buttons...I am using the old keyboard right now as it works from time to time...

Now that is the news that I certainly didn't want to hear, but it may be time for a new 'puter, period.

It may just be a driver issue but when these puters start doing strange things alot of times it the motherboard about to take a dump. Is it a Dell by chance?
I have a wireless mouse that uses a USB plugin that looks like a thumbdrive. It would intermittently hang and drove me nuts. What I found was that the wireless part is a very low output RF broadcaster/receiver. The computer was jamming and interferring with the signal when I plugged the USB receiver into the back of computer. Placing the USB receiver next to or close to your mouse and keyboard may solve the problem. Simply running a USB extension may do the trick. My computer has USB ports in the front, on top, and in back. The one on top works the best for the wireless mouse.
If possible, try plugging the wireless keyboard receiver into another computer without installing the software. As someone else suggested, it should work just fine. If it doesn't, then you probably got a defective product.
Try a known good wired keyboard on your computer. If you still have problems, then it could be a hardware issue with your computer or a problem with the operating system. To determine which is the culprit, you can download a boot disk from http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ or http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html and boot your computer up with either of those. If you still have problems while running under either of these operating systems, then it's definitely hardware.
