Public school dress code?
From the code
The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery. It should never be festooned, drawn back, nor up, in folds, but always allowed to fall free. Bunting of blue, white, and red, always arranged with the blue above, the white in the middle, and the red below, should be used for covering a speaker's desk, draping the front of the platform, and for decoration in general. As you can see it refers to the actual "flag" not it's image or a representation.
No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform. However, a flag patch may be affixed to the uniform of military personnel, firemen, policemen, and members of patriotic organizations. The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing. Therefore, the lapel flag pin being a replica, should be worn on the left lapel near the heart. Here again it refers to the "flag" not the image or representation.

whats wrong with wearing an american flag t-shirt on may 5th??? isn't cinco de mayo just a mexico thing? most americans just celebrate it cause it's an excuse to get drunk with margaritas...i ate soft shell tacos...
Just for starters, Wittom, the American Flag is not supposed to be worn as a "costume", on a T-shirt, across some young chick's butt, and so on. Read the Flag Code.
Every time I see the American flag worn as some redneck's shirt, I want to rip it off him/or her, and stuff it down their throat. But, as an Air Force Officer, I made a sacred vow to uphold the Constitution, which gives these misguided "citizens" the right to treat the Flag with no respect at all, just as they are doing when they wear it as an article of clothing.
I'm all for National Pride, but really, some people need to learn what this great Nation is REALLY all about!

So, this great nation is really about.... flag etiquette?

The words "flag, standard, colors, or ensign", as used herein, shall include any flag, standard, colors, ensign, or any picture or representation of either, or of any part or parts of either, made of any substance or represented on any substance, of any size evidently purporting to be either of said flag, standard, colors, or ensign of the United States of America or a picture or a representation of either, upon which shall be shown the colors, the stars and the stripes, in any number of either thereof, or of any part or parts of either, by which the average person seeing the same without deliberation may believe the same to represent the flag, colors, standard, or ensign of the United States of America.
I don't know how it could be more clear?

Good grief! Read Article 3, near the end:

Nice try!!!
Here's the entire paragraph:
§3. Use of flag for advertising purposes; mutilation of flag

You see its the liberal/socialists in Washington that want to stifle American pride and patriotism with this anti-American rhetoric. Jack did you vote for the Kenyan?

*sigh*, There's nothing to report. You either understand the principles this great Country is founded on or you don't. Here's a link to the Flag Code: http://www.ushistory.org/betsy/flagcode.htm
Please read it carefully. If you want to ignore it, fine! That's your sacred right as a US citizen. I've lost many friends who died defending that right, so, it's over to you.

What you talking about....the illegals do have more rights than us citizens. Why do you think the Democrats/Liberals protect these folks.....99% of illegals will vote for them.

So, Jack, are you in agreement with the students who believe that these "flag costume" wearing students should apologise for wearing an American flag on a day that is a made up holiday to celebrate Mexican heritage? You're issue is with the use of the American flag? Have you noticed that the American flag is used in countless scenerios? It's on all sorts of articals of clothing. Who is at fault for that, the redneck or the company manufacturing and selling? What about all the other products that have images of the American flag on them?
It's interesting, you close other threads because you don't like how the discussion is going then you comment in this thread talking about ripping someone t-shirt off and stuffing it down thier throat. I respect your servise to our country, but beyond that.....

Of course I see the Flag used inappropriately, all the time. Who's at fault? The guy out to make a buck. The guy appealing to a sense of "patriotism" for whatever cause he is promoting. And, we simply don't have to buy into it, if we wish to honor the Flag Code.
And, please don't bother with the, "I respect your service..." It's gotten trite. I'm not blaming you here, I'm just tired of seeing it when it's been so overused. I respect your opinion in all things, and, I'd simply like you to do this same.
Yup, I probably should not have said I'd like to "stuff a t-shirt" down someone's throat. As you may remember, I also said it was their RIGHT to wear that representation of the Flag in a disrespectful manner. And, my fellow Service members and I spent a good portion of our lives defending that right. I can dislike something and still defend it.
I closed threads because they had degenerated into a name-calling match. So far, that has not happened here. If we want to discuss a viewpoint intelligently, and with dignity for each others opinions, I'm happy to let the thread continue.
So, what is the Flag for me? It's a symbol, of the blood and hopes and essential goodness of the people of this land, and those who came before. If I take this symbol too seriously, just forgive me.
Edit: My Father's casket was covered with our Flag. I do not like seeing it used for less noble purposes.

Please, be serious.
Edit: please notice how this sentence is constructed:
"or who, within the District of Columbia, shall manufacture, sell, expose for sale, or to public view, or give away or have in possession for sale, or to be given away or for use for any purpose, any article or substance being an article of merchandise, or a receptacle for merchandise or article or thing for carrying or transporting merchandise, upon which shall have been printed, painted, attached, or otherwise placed a representation of any such flag, standard, colors, or ensign, to advertise, call attention to, decorate, mark, or distinguish the article or substance on which so placed shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor and shall be punished by a fine not exceeding $100 or by imprisonment for not more than thirty days, or both, in the discretion of the court."
If you read it carefully, and, it DOES take a bit of reading, it says a "fine or imprisonment" can be levied against a person within the District of Columbia. There is no such penalty for persons outside the District. This, of course is something our lawmakers have been trying to change for many years. The Article is not just about the District of Columbia. It applies everywhere, but there are no penalties for not adhering to it outside of the District.
