I just took a quick look at it myself. But it could have been a retainer clip.
I guess we could bust the muffler open to see what's in it
Tumba take a look see real good at the sparkplug-could have been a piece of the insulator or something like that. Probably a Champion anyway!!!

The plug was good, and the valves looked like they were sealing. Like I said it also had compression, and no scoring on the cylinder wall. But somethign did hit the top of the piston. When I visit him again I'll check to see if the head will hold liquid. I did compress and release the valves while I was there, they felt good also. I'll check it a little closer next time. I was just in kind of a hurry that day. Thanks!

Remove your carb and look inside of it where the air flow flap is at. It has two small screws. They will vibrate out and be sucked right in. I had both of mine go at the same time. Son of a gun redlined and damaged the engine. I had to replace the carb, but now she is for sure down on power and burns oil. Got to loave those b&s inteks. I bought a new rider one week later with a Kohler. Dont plan on ever going back to briggs. While back in the day they were king they are crap now.

B&S used to make great small engines - many years ago. For reasons I don't totally understand, their quality went seriously downhill just as Honda was breaking into the market. I have many die hard "buy American" contractor friends who refuse to buy B&S engines due to numerous quality problems and only buy Hondas these days.

Briggs has a big push going on right now to get their market share back, but everything in my garage has a Honda on it after numerous B&S failures. If you ask me, they've got a serious uphill battle ahead of them.
