Power of the Internet
Power of the Internet
So, I just finished reading the thread about the guy having an issue with the Dodge dealership over the eBay auction. I am glad to see he is getting such support over his issue and hope he comes out on top.
Interestingly enough, I have had an "issue" myself in which if it were not for the support from people on an internet forum, I am not sure where I would be.
I will try and condense this as much as possible and will include a link to the original thread if you wanna read all 40 + pages...
I bought a camera lens off of Craigslist in Sept. of last year. Retails for $1,800, goes used for about $1,400 I found one on CL for $950. I contacted the guy and talked to him in the phone, seemed legit, he knew about cameras, everything seemed cool. We met, made the transaction, everyone is happy.
Fast forward to about 2 weeks ago. I get a phone call from the police, yeah you know where this is going...
Its stolen. Kid stole it in NC, ripped a studio off for 14 grand, I just bought one of the lenses he stole. The police got a hold of me through cell phone records. I of course told them I had the lens. After a long story, I had to mail it back as the original owner was not compensated through insurance. I had to pay for the shipping costing nearly $50, so I am out $1,000 and the lens...bummer.
So, I post the story on a Canon forum (photography-on-the-net.com) , pretty much to vent. The story BLOWS UP! I had a lawyer contact me via PM and offer her services free! She called the police and was VERY helpful to me. Now it really gets amazing. A gentleman in South Dakota starts a fund for me to get a new lens! In less than 12 hours, over $2,000 was raised!
Adorama (a camera store) also chipped in and took $300 off the price of the lens and gave me a free filter for it ($60+). So I got the brand new updated version of the lens (Canon 70-200 2.8 L IS Mark II, and a Hoya CPL) being shipped to me.
Unreal...I am still in shock.
I have been a member of that forum for maybe a year? Have not met a soul from there, and am still a complete noob to photography and got that response. Absolutely amazing.
I filed charges and will follow through with the suit against the kid. If I receive restitution I will make a hefty donation to the website.
The power of the Internet. It is refreshing to see there are some amazing people out there, worldwide!

The internet is indeed truly powerful. I'm sure we've all read stories of guys stealing parts or cars and the people that were stolen from post about it on a message board and within days or sometimes even hours the property is tracked down and the thief harassed, authorities notified, etc.
